MICHAEL STEWART turned the air blue live on BBC Scotland when describing Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell and his role in the Ibrox dressing room.

And fellow broadcaster Tom English said: "It made me wince, that word."

The English playmaker has submitted TWO transfer requests to leave the club over the summer.

That has seen him frozen out of Philippe Clement's first team squad and train with the B team squad.

However Cantwell HAS still been handed a first-team squad number in Gers 2024-25 roll call.

Philippe Clement also said there could yet be a future in Light Blue for the ex-Norwich and Bournemouth player.

But as he's left in limbo over his future and the new season kicked off in Scotland his position in the squad was subject of discussion ahead of his team;s first match, against Hearts at Tynecastle.

And as Stewart discussed each possibility in the scenario, he let slip with language Auntie's listeners would be quite unaccustomed to at lunchtime.

His fellow broadcasters on BBC Sportsound on Radio Scotland awkwardly tried to brush off the slip but fellow panellist Tom English admitted: "It made me wince."

Stewart was discussing the situation with host Kenny McIntyre and tried to weigh up both sides of Cantwell's future and if his position creates a problem position amongst his team-mates at Rangers.

Pitching himself as a hypothetical team-mate he said: "I think it's dependent on the actual character.

"If he's regarded as a good lad and a strong member of the team then personally I would be thinking you just hope that he can be persuaded and his mind can change that he can hang about.

Philippe Clement was far from satisfied with his side's first half performance as they dropped points at Tynecastle on day one of the Premiership season

"If he's a bit of a p**** and you don't really like him then maybe you're thinking to yourself I don't want him in the dressing room.
I'd rather he left.

"But these are things that are impossible to say - what the atmosphere is like in the Rangers changing room with Todd Cantwell whether he's a good lad; whether he's somebody that's a heartbeat of the team or not; or whether he's looked upon as [someone] I'd be quite happy for him to leave.

"That's personally how I would look at it - a good guy you want him to hang about, he's an asset to the team.

"If he's not you'd be disappointed that a bit of quality is leaving, but there's a bigger picture there as well."

As the discussion continued host McIntyre attempted to address the slip and moderate the discussion more.

He cut Lee McCulloch off, saying: "And don't repeat what Michael said - we know what he meant!"

Stewart pled his case and added: "There's no problem with that Kenny, surely?"

The awkward deliberations continued as McIntyre said: "Well I don't know. I was looking at Tom English there and I was just trying to think."

Later host McIntyre apologised and said "You’re listening to Sportsound on opening weekend of the league season.

"It's goalless at Tynecastle, we want to apologise for any offence caused by language in the pre-match chat that was before kick-off."

Cantwell was not part of Clement's matchday squad for the weekend's SPFL kick-off against Hearts - just as he sat out all of the first-team's scheduled pre-season friendlies.

Like those warm-up games Rangers failed to register a win, drawing 0-0 in an entertaining season opener at Tynecastle.
