Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a touching message to his former teammate Pepe, following the defender's decision to step away from football.

Pepe has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 41. The veteran enjoyed an outstanding career that saw him win 34 trophies.

The divisive figure became the oldest player to feature at Euro 2024, having also taken the title of the oldest outfielder and oldest goalscorer in the Champions League during 2023/24. Pepe was the first outfield player over 40 to play in the knockout stages of the competition when Porto faced Arsenal earlier this year.

Ronaldo shared much of his career with his compatriot. The Portuguese stars found success on the international stage at Euro 2016 but also found glory as teammates at Real Madrid.

The pair shared three Champions League wins during the time they shared together at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo suggested the connection went beyond their exploits on the pitch however.

In a message on Instagram, Ronaldo said: "We won everything there was to win on the field, but the biggest achievement is the friendship and respect I have for you. You are unique my brother. Thank you for so much."

At 39, Ronaldo is two years Pepe's junior and is currently continuing his career in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr. The former Manchester United star, despite his struggles on the international stage, has continued to score goals aplenty at club level.

Since moving to the Middle East, Ronaldo has netted 64 goals in 70 appearances. While the forward has staved off retirement thus far, it would appear it is on his mind after admitting the most recent Euros would be his last.

"It is without a doubt my last European Championship,' Ronaldo said, via Portuguese outlet O Jogo. "But I don't get emotional about that, I get emotional about everything that football involves.

"Because of the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm of seeing my supporters, my family, the affection that people have for me. It's not about leaving football, because if I do, what else would I need to do or win?

"It won't be about getting one more point or one less point. Making people happy is what motivates me the most."
