Liverpool agree Fabio Carvalho transfer to Premier League rival and land huge profit

The Reds signed Fabio Carvalho in 2022 from Fulham but despite making an early impression, the Portugal international struggled to break into the first team

Liverpool have agreed a deal worth up to £27.5million with Brentford for the transfer of Fabio Carvalho.

Carvalho, 21, joined the Reds in 2022 from Fulham for a deal worth £7million. But despite promising first impressions, most memorably scoring a very late winner against Newcastle in his sixth appearance for Liverpool, the Portugal under-21 international has struggled to impart himself into first-team plans.

And despite starting - and impressing - each of Liverpool's four pre-season friendly matches in the United States, Carvalho is set to join Brentford on a permanent transfer before the end of the transfer window in a savvy bit of business from the Reds.

They're set to land £22million up front, with a further £5.5million in add-ons. The funds earned from Carvalho's sale are also boosted by a 17.5 percent sell-on clause also inserted into the terms, which will keep Carvalho at the G-Tech Community Stadium until 2029.

Fulham will earn about £5million from the sale to Brentford, with the Cottagers having inserted a 20 percent sell-on clause in the initial deal.

Carvalho endured a turbulent season last year. The Portuguese footballer spent last campaign away from Merseyside, first with RB Leipzig where he started just three games and managed a paltry 360 minutes in the first half of the season. He then returned to England where he was sent on loan to play-off hunting Hull City and excelled for Liam Rosenior’s side . But despite scoring nine goals in 20 appearances and displaying impressive performances, the Tigers missed out on playoffs.

New Liverpool boss Arne Slot had ample time to assess Carvalho and his future with the club during the Reds' pre-season tour across the Atlantic. The young attacker showed promising signs and earned a starting berth while senior colleagues were missing, but was seemingly not deemed integral to Slot's plans ahead of the new season.

Carvalho will join Thomas Frank's side immediately for pre-season, with a medical scheduled in the coming days after Carvalho agreed personal terms.

The 21-year-old is expected to compete for a place in the starting XI with Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Kevin Schade, with questions still over Ivan Toney's future.
