Willum Willumsson latest as Birmingham City injury list grows before Charlton
Willum Willumsson had to be replaced in the 51st minute of Birmingham City's opening League One game
Birmingham City will assess the injury which cut short Willum Willumsson’s debut against Reading before this week’s double-header with Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers.
Blues head to The Valley to take on Charlton in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening. They could be without summer signing Willumsson who aggravated a knee issue in the 1-1 draw with Reading on Saturday. Alfie May’s late penalty ensured Blues avoided defeat to the Royals.
A much changed line-up is expected against Charlton with Chris Davies expected to run the rule over some of his fringe players. Such is the strength of Blues’ squad, Tyler Roberts, George Hall, Romelle Donovan and new signing Ayumu Yokoyama didn’t even make the bench for the Reading match.
One of those players could replace Willumsson in the XI. Speaking after the match, Davies said of Willumsson’s 51st minute withdrawal: “He’d had a knock on his knee and he’d been struggling with it a little last week. I think after half time it stiffened up and got a bit worse, he couldn’t carry on.”

Blues will be without left-back Lee Buchanan and midfielder Alfie Chang. Buchanan is nursing a calf injury and Davies doesn’t expect him to be back in contention until late September. Chang is still recovering from a serious knee injury sustained last August.
Davies has limited full-back options due to Buchanan’s absence and could use Brandon Khela in a wide defensive position at The Valley. Versatile Khela replaced Ethan Laird at right-back in the opening game but Blues are in talks to sign Iceland international Alfons Sampsted to strengthen in that area.
