Manchester United will be hoping to make the perfect start to the 2024/25 Premier League season when they face Fulham at Old Trafford this evening.

United, in their first full season under Ineos' governance, will be determined to put last season's disappointing eighth-placed finish behind them and look ahead to more prosperous times.

Despite their pre-season results proving indifferent, United have produced some encouraging performances in recent weeks. They were unfortunate to leave Wembley empty handed last weekend after being beaten on penalties by Manchester City in the Community Shield. However, United's pre-season preparations were largely overshadowed by the losses of important players to injuries, meaning there are already fears they might experience a repeat of last season's curse.

Victor Lindelof

Injury: Unknown

Swedish centre-back Lindelof was taken off at half-time in United's final pre-season friendly against Liverpool in South Carolina. Manager Erik ten Hag, speaking after the game, confirmed he had been forced to withdraw the defender as a precautionary measure.

Despite not specifying what injury he has been struggling with, he was left out of the squad that faced City at Wembley last weekend. Ten Hag did not issue an update on him when addressing the media yesterday (Thursday) ahead of tonight's game.

Possible return date: Unknown.

Leny Yoro

Injury: Fractured metatarsal

Summer signing Yoro fractured his metatarsal in just his second appearance for the club, ruling him out for up to three months. He successfully underwent surgery earlier this month and Ten Hag recently admitted the defender is already chomping at the bit to get back out on the pitch.

He said: "He is being positive. He's already started his rehab. There is a fire burning there and as I've said, for his age he is very mature. He won't get distracted and he knows what he wants."

Possible return date: Mid-to-late October.

Will Fish

Injury: Torn ligaments

Fellow centre-back Fish is facing up to five weeks on the sidelines after he suffered torn ligaments in the aforementioned clash with Liverpool on the pre-season tour. That blow has put the brakes on a suspected exit from Old Trafford ahead of the transfer window closing.

The prognosis of his injury, however, is better than he had expected. He has spent the last two seasons on loan at Hibernian and was recently attracting interest from the Championship.

Possible return date: September 14 (Southampton A).

Luke Shaw

Injury: Calf

United announced on Tuesday that left-back Shaw will miss the start of the new campaign with a calf injury. In their statement, United said Shaw 'is working hard on his rehabilitation with a view to being available after the first international break', meaning he could return in mid-September. He has not played for the Reds since February 18.

Possible return date: September 14 (Southampton A).

Tyrell Malacia

Injury: Knee

Left-back Malacia has been out injured for more than a year because of a knee problem. He last featured for United in any capacity on the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

He has been working hard on his rehabilitation programme and Ten Hag recently confirmed he could be back in contention within the next couple of months. "He is not that far [off], but he is now in a progress situation," said Ten Hag. "At a relatively short notice, he can again return into team training and then into team performance in games. I think it would be possible [to be available again] in two months."

Possible return date: October.

Rasmus Hojlund

Injury: Hamstring

Hojlund will miss the start of the new Premier League campaign with a hamstring injury. He was dealt the blow in United's opening game of pre-season, just minutes after scoring the opener in their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in Los Angeles.

It is expected he will be out for up to six weeks, meaning the earliest he is likely to return is after the September international break. If that proves to be the case, he will miss United's first three league games this season.
