Peter Schmeichel has taken aim at Luke Shaw for not "prioritising Manchester United " as the left-back finds himself injured yet again.

The England star managed to get himself fit for the Euros, playing in the latter stages of the tournament as the Three Lions progressed to the final. That came after months on the sideline with Shaw not playing for United since February.

It has left Erik ten Hag seeking makeshift solutions at left-back and further tested United's resources. Shaw has been plagued by injuries throughout his decade in Manchester, but has been a star performer when fit and available.

His latest injury setback has particularly angered some fans and their iconic goalkeeper has also aired his frustration with Shaw. He will miss the opening weeks of the season, which begins on Friday with a game against Fulham.

He said on BBC Radio 5 Live : "Luke Shaw last played (for Man Utd) in February and yet he still went to the Euros. I think he played a little bit in the quarter-final, and then some of the semi-final and then he played the final. Now, he's injured again. He's so important. He's got experience and he's a top class left back.

"He's a Manchester United player - we pay him. He should be focusing and prioritising Manchester United and not his country."

Shaw has hit back at suggestions he's more motivated to play for England than he is for the Red Devils. He missed out on the FA Cup final success at Wembley back in May despite desperately trying to make the contest. Shaw revealed that it was his desire to get back fit that actually led to him remaining injured.

He said: “No one knows the situation, what’s been happening. Obviously, I think people have seen that there was a setback, but I was actually very close to returning to team training. I think it was the day before. In my opinion, I was pushing to try and get back for the games and the final and I think I pushed too hard."

Erik ten Hag has confirmed, despite the frustrations with injuries last term, that Shaw won't be rushed back but only envisages him being on the sideline for a short period.

The Dutchman said: "He will return in the short term, it doesn't take long. We are looking forward, of course, for Luke Shaw. He is a very important player for our team so we want to get him back as soon as possible but we can't force this process."
