Jamie Carragher verdict on Liverpool ace Joe Gomez speaks volumes after Newcastle transfer link

Newcastle are once again being linked with Gomez as the Marc Guehi deal stutters

With a deal for Newcastle United to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace stalling as the Eagles look to cash in on the England international, Eddie Howe's team are once again being linked with Liverpool's Joe Gomez. A player who could easily have already signed for Newcastle earlier this summer as part of a deal to take Anthony Gordon to Anfield, Gomez is someone the Mags like and see as a genuine option for their squad.

It's easy to see why Newcastle like the 27-year-old England international, with ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher's previous comments about Gomez only highlighting further why Newcastle are attracted to Gomez as a signing.

When revisiting Carragher's previous comments about Gomez back in 2020, the Sky Sports pundit points out the latter's impressive leadership qualities which will be a further attraction for Howe.

"What really stood out for me this season with Joe Gomez was his performance against Everton in the FA Cup when it was virtually an under-23s team with three experienced players in there," said Carragher.

"Now, Joe isn't the most experienced player, but he was still one of the most experienced by far in that back four, and that's always a big sign for me with centre-backs.

"Can they be the leader of the back four? Can they organize people and almost be the one that people look to? On that day he was. Everton played a first-choice team, for them it was a Premier League team and his performance was outstanding, helping the young players, and that bodes well for the future.

"Yes, we know he is a great player, but can he go on and become the leader one day when Virgil van Dijk maybe moves on? In that game, I saw those qualities, so that bodes well for the future for Liverpool and Joe Gomez."
