Joe Gomez transfer latest - Liverpool recall, Arne Slot explanation, Anthony Gordon swap deal

Liverpool central defender Joe Gomez is the subject of interest from Premier League rivals as we enter the final stages of the summer transfer window

Joe Gomez is set to return to the Liverpool squad for Sunday's Premier League clash against Brentford after Arne Slot heaped praise on the defender on Friday. The 27-year-old did not travel to Ipswich Town last weekend as speculation surrounding his future continued.

In Friday's pre-match press conference, though, Slot insisted Gomez's omission from the Liverpool squad that secured a 2-0 win at Portman Road was fitness-related.

The England international was on the verge of joining Newcastle United in June in a deal worth £45m before the Magpies pulled the plug on a deal which would have seen Anthony Gordon move to Anfield.

But as the transfer window enters its final days, what is the latest with Gomez's future and could he end his nine-year stay at Anfield before August 30th?

Which teams are interested in Joe Gomez?

As reported by the ECHO last week, plenty of teams are interested in a move for Joe Gomez. Those include Newcastle United, obviously, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Bayern Munich, Fulham and, of course, Chelsea. The defender was also linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League last summer.

He has three years remaining on his current deal after signing an extension with the Reds back in 2022.

What has Arne Slot said about Joe Gomez's future?

Speaking in Friday's pre-Brentford press conference, Arne Sloot said Gomez is available for selection and his head "has been in the right place" since he returned to the club for pre-season in July.

“His head has been in the right place for three weeks," said Slot. "He has worked really hard since he came back. He didn’t play a lot in the Euros and when he came back in the first sessions he couldn't train the whole session so we had to manage his load and that was also a bit a reason why he wasn't in the team on Sunday.

"But this week he had a good week in terms of load and how much he could do with the team. He is one of the players that I see new things from and learn things what I see from him, also combined with other players. It has been a good week for him and us until now.

“At this moment I am expecting everyone to be here (after the transfer deadline). But like you know, everything can change."

What has Joe Gomez said about his Liverpool future?

Gomez hasn't directly spoken out about his scuppered move to Newcastle United or indeed any of the transfer interest in him this summer. However, he did post an Instagram earlier this summer previewing his 10th season at Anfield.

Why did Joe Gomez's move to Newcastle United fall through?

The Reds agreed in principle a £45million deal for Gomez as part of a package that would have seen fellow England international Anthony Gordon switch to Anfield for £75m.

However, the Magpies ultimately ditched the transfer as they discovered other avenues to meet the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules ahead of the June 30 deadline.
