Everton will host Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup after last night's draw pitted the two Premier League clubs together. The match will provide another opportunity for supporters to take in a game at Goodison Park in the Old Lady's final season - and seeing ball number eleven come out with a home tie was a welcome boost after some long trips to Doncaster Rovers, Aston Villa and, one of the most miserable away games in recent years, that first of two chastening defeats in four days down at Bournemouth.
Everton are in the third round having beaten Doncaster at home on Tuesday night, a match that was used to give Iliman Ndiaye, Jesper Lindstrom and Jake O'Brien their first starts in Royal Blue. One of the big questions now is whether the Southampton tie, to be played next month, will be an opportunity to do the same for any more newcomers.
With the transfer window into the final 48 hours expect late drama for Everton. Behind the scenes, efforts are ongoing to strengthen on a shoestring, with the market being watched for any late opportunities that could fall to Everton, even if the club is operating under financial constraints. Lyon central midfielder Orel Mangala is one target being pursued while his teammate, winger Ernest Nuamah, is also being linked to the Blues.
The big one to watch is Dominic Calvert-Lewin though. His contract situation, and Everton's finances, mean a sensible bid for the striker in the final hours would spark an internal dilemma for a club that would find a transfer fee useful but may struggle to replace their main man in the time left. Neal Maupay and Mason Holgate could also depart.
With Sean Dyche set to speak ahead this afternoon ahead of the visit of Bournemouth, expect plenty of developments. We will be with you throughout.

Final thoughts from Finch Farm ahead of transfer deadline day
Right, I'm signing off for the night but will be with you for what I anticpate will be a busy transfer deadline day for Everton. Neal Maupay looks set to leave, Orel Mangala is on the brink of joining, and a few other deals hold potential - including the prospect of Mason Holgate and several U21s leaving on loan.
I leave you with my final thoughts from Finch Farm today - you can find them HERE
Breaking: Centre back secures loan move
Hello everyone, some more transfer news here. Elijah Campbell, the Everton Under-21s centre back who made a few appearances for the first team in pre-season, has joined Scottish Premiership side Ross County on a season-long loan.
A good move for the 20-year-old, who was on loan at Fleetwood Town in the second half of last season. Expect more loan departures for the academy talents.
Press conference updates
Just a heads up - I am at Finch Farm now for Sean Dyche's pre-Bournemouth press conference. We have a separate live blog for that, which is available HERE
Maupay takes dig at Everton
Well, he was never going to go quietly was he?

Championship interest in Mason Holgate
Understand there are several clubs considering a move for Mason Holgate. Most of them are in the Championship and would be seeking a loan deal that would require Everton to cover a large part of his wages. Everton would prefer a permanent deal but may well have to weigh up keeping a player who is well down the pecking order or allowing him to leave and at least having a contribution towards his wages.
Maupay 'set for Marseille move'
Have been writing for a few days on Maupay being set to leave Everton, with talks with Marseille advancing. That now looks increasingly like to come off, with reports now from Fabrizio Romano of a breakthrough in the talks.
I'm chasing the latest but it is clear (as mentioned in previous reports) that there is an exit route there for Maupay and one that probably works in everyone's favour.
Tributes planned for Super Kev
Kevin Campbell will be honoured by the club and supporters at the home game against Bournemouth on Saturday, with his family due to be in attendance at Goodison Park.

An overview of the coming day and a half...

A late transfer window state-of-play from an Everton perspective:
- Calvert-Lewin
- Maupay
- Holgate
- Mangala
Latest - HERE
Neal Maupay a player who could move on

Neal Maupay is one of several players who could yet depart. After a season on loan at Brentford last year there appears to be limited opportunities for him with the Blues this season.
Here is what Dyche had to say when asked about the forward's future on Tuesday:
"Possibly, it was just a risk and reward scenario [leaving him out against Doncaster], there is possibly something that is going to happen but we are waiting on that."
Marseille are among the clubs interested, full story here
Final 48 hours of the summer transfer window
Hello everyone. Joe Thomas here - checking in ahead of what will be a busy a few days. We are into the final 48 hours of the transfer window and, while Everton may not have a lot of money to spend, they could still be on the brink of business. Incomings and outgoings remain possible, with Orel Mangala being pursued by the club as an answer to the limited options at central midfield. Meanwhile the wide areas - in defence and midfield - are places the club would love to strengthen if an opportunity arises. That is a big *if*, I must stress.
Nuamah enquiry
Everton are one of a number of clubs to be linked with Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah.
According to L'Equipe, both the Blues and Nottingham Forest had shown an interest in the 20-year-old winger. It has also been reported by The Athletic that Fulham are interested in the player after ending their pursuit of Rayan Cherki.
Lyon are said to value Nuamah at around £25 million. Last season the youngster made 21 stars in Ligue 1 and came off the bench a further eight times, scoring three goals and noching one assist.
Godfrey could be on the move again
Could Ben Godfrey's stay at Atalanta turn out to be a short one?
The versatile defender only joined the Europa League winners this summer in a £10m deal from Everton, but according to reports in Italy the club are already considering moving him on.
According to Alfredo Pedulla (h/t Sport Witness), Godfrey is 'struggling' to take on board the tactical instructions from Gian Piero Gasperini. As a result, La Dea are said to be considering sending the England international out on loan, with a decision set to be made about his future soon.

Maupay update
Dyche also shared an update on Maupay's future on Tuesday.
The forward spent last season on loan at Brentford and was left out of the matchday squad for the clash with Doncaster.
"Possibly, it was just a risk and reward scenario [leaving him out against Doncaster], there is possibly something that is going to happen but we are waiting on that," said the manager about the forward.
Maupay has been linked with Marseille already this window, as well as with a return to Brentford.

Mangala latest
The ECHO understands that Everton are interested in a deal to sign Mangala from Lyon.
The midfielder has been in France for just one season after moving from Nottingham Forest, although he only made eight league appearances - four as a starter - in his first Ligue 1 campaign.
As a result, the Belgium international could be available on loan. Mangala spent two-and-a-half years with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and was largely impressive at the City Ground.
Nevertheless, Dyche was keen to play down the links after the win over Doncaster on Tuesday.
"I can say we have been linked heavily with about 100 players," he said. "As far as I know, at this stage, it is unlikely that anything changes, but we will see."
Calvert-Lewin and Broja
Calvert-Lewin is a target for Chelsea in the final days of the transfer window, while Everton retain an interest in Broja.
That's according to The Athletic, where it's suggested the London club are keen to add depth to their options up top. Any deal could also potentially pave the way for Broja to head to Merseyside, with the Blues said to retain a long-term interest in the Albania forward.
Broja was seemingly close to joining Ipswich Town earlier in the window, although the transfer has recently hit a snag. The Chelsea prospect has struggled with form and fitness in recent years, having initially shown excellent promise.
Calvert-Lewin was close to joining Newcastle earlier in the window, although a deal eventually collapsed due to personal terms not being agreed.

Montiel links
Everton are reportedly looking to solve their right-back crisis by moving for Gonzalo Montiel.
According to ABC Sevilla (h/t Sport Witness), the Blues are interested in the 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest. Sevilla are said to be keen to make room on their wage bill by offloading a number of players.
Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven are also said to be admirers of the player, while Forest could aso apparently look to sign him again.
Montiel famously scored the winning penalty in the 2022 World Cup final for Argentina, helping his team overcome France after a dramatic 3-3 draw.

Maupay reaction
The fallout from Saturday's 4-0 loss to Tottenham was ramped up again on Sunday, as a video emerged of the Everton players being abused by supporters as they boarded their train from London.
Maupay and Holgate seemed to be the two players targeted, with the former called a 'rat' by angry fans as they waited at the barrier.
Maupay has taken to social media to give his reaction to the footage.
Overview of Sunday's coverage
That's it for me for today, thank you for joining me on this blog. I'll be back with you tomorrow as we enter the final days of the summer transfer window.
For those joining this late, I will leave you with an overview of some of today's coverage:
- Sean Dyche blasted his players' 'subservient' approach against Spurs - read HERE
- Moments missed at Tottenham, including classy gestures from Richarlison and James Tarkowski - read HERE
- Shambles and relegation fears - how the national papers reacted to Everton's loss - read HERE
- And my opinion piece on how the opportunity given to Roman Dixon may make it harder for Sean Dyche to leave out some of his new signings in the coming games - read HERE
Opinion: The 'other' consequences of the Roman Dixon call
Sean Dyche’s decision to give Roman Dixon his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur was a bold one. To an extent, it paid off. Dixon’s debut ended up being one of few bright spots on what was another difficult day for Everton in north London.
The 19-year-old acquitted himself well and won his battles against Spurs winger Wilson Odobert. He can take immense pride in his display and Dyche can take credit for giving him an unexpected opportunity. It was a move that will have immediate, perhaps unintended, consequences that go beyond Everton’s search for an answer to the long-term issue on the right side of defence, however.
Read out what I thin those side effects are in this opinion piece - HERE
And James Tarkowski also showing his class in the tunnel at Spurs
Richarlison’s gesture was not the only touch of class on show. James Tarkowski was happy to take the time to chat with the mascot who was set to walk onto the pitch with him as they laughed together in the tunnel.
As they prepared to do so, the heavens opened. Tarkowski responded by removing his training coat and draping it over the youngster before the pair walked onto the pitch.
After the match it was the centre-back who fronted up to the media - as he did after the Brighton & Hove Albion disappointment and as he so often does at difficult times. He does not have to do this - doing so is evidence of the respect he clearly has for the fanbase.
Richarlison's touch of class

Tottenham have not provided a happy home for the Brazil international, who found himself on the bench even with £65m summer signing Dominic Solanke ruled out through injury. His situation seems absurd from afar, particularly when viewed from Goodison Park, where he remains largely adored.
Richarlison makes little secret of his love for Everton. Arnaut Danjuma spoke of this while on loan last season - reflecting on his previous decision to walk away from the Blues in the 11th hour to join Spurs, only to find Richarlison waiting for him in the dressing room to question his decision.
Social media posts point to his remaining affection for his former club and his actions do, too. On this occasion he finished the match with a walk to the away end, where he gave his shirt to a young Everton supporter.
Post-Spurs thoughts
Frustratingly predictable but that didn’t make it any easier to watch. Spurs a bad opponent at wrong time for Everton - like Brighton, well set up to exploit current issues

Some players expected to be in contention for Bournemouth return

Some positive news, potentially (and much needed). James Garner and Seamus Coleman, who have each missed the start of the season with a calf injury, could be back for Bournemouth. Jarrad Branthwaite is not expected to be ready for then, however. Full details - HERE
Richarlison makes no effort to hide his love for the Blues

Classy gestures from Richarlison and James Tarkowski and the distress Everton's plight is now causing to rival supporters, an overview of titbits spotted from inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Newcastle to revive DCL interest?
A new report here claiming Newcastle may return for Dominic Calvert-Lewin - and that Kieran Trippier might head the other way.
Personally, I think the Calvert-Lewin situation is very much a live one. He is out of contract next summer and any meaningful bid this week would be considered - and the ultimate decision may end up out of Dyche's control. Where it would leave Everton is problematic though - he is clearly the best striker at the club even if this is a side that struggles for goals. But we know Newcastle like him and they may see an opportunity for some astute business (from their side) here.
On Trippier heading in the opposite direction, I am less sure. Trippier would strengthen Everton - I think he would be the first choice right back should he arrive. But Dyche spoke at length last week about his belief right back is not an area of priority and that a new addition would need to be with the long-term in mind to make sense for him. I think there is interest at Everton in Trippier, but Dyche will have Ashley Young back next week and could well have Seamus Coleman available too. So does he need another 30-something full back who has suffered recent injury issues? I think the answer to that could be yes, on the right terms, but Everton also have issues elsewhere so it would also be dependent on who else is available at Everton's range of affordability.
Marseille continue to monitor Neal Maupay situation

One player whose future is very much up in the air is Neal Maupay. The forward does not appear to be in Dyche's plans for the new season and Everton are open to doing business for the forward. Marseille have seen a loan offer rejected by Everton - mainly over technical issues surrounding what would happen next year when his contract is up.
Marseille are still keeping tabs on him though and according to the report from France have been told a fee of around 8m Euros would be needed to make the deal permanent.
Paddy Power cause a stir
Well, this has understandably caused a stir. Bookmakers Paddy Power say they have paid out on bets for Everton to get relegated following the club's torrid start to the campaign.
We are in just the second week of the new season and this is already the second time bookies have sparked angst among Blues - last week Sky Bet slashed the odds of Jarrad Branthwaite to join Liverpool in a move that attracted headlines - though the potential for such a controversial deal was quickly dismissed by both Everton and the player's camp, as the ECHO reported.

Sean Dyche questions 'subservient' approach of players
I spoke to Sean Dyche after the final whistle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. When I asked what he had said to the players in the dressing room after the defeat, this is what he said:
“What about taking responsibility at 0-0? Strangely, it is easier to take responsibility when you are one or two goals down. Every manager will call it 2-0 football and then everyone starts playing. What about playing when it is 0-0?
“So within all the challenges, which are quite obvious, we have got to remind ourselves of the truth of what we are, and what we are trying to achieve, and that part of the mentality of the group, we have shown before how positive it can be, we let it go too easily.
“And today, we know they are a good outfit who have spent money on some real talent. They are in a big stadium, their first game at home and everything, and they started like that, and we just started a little bit subserviently.
“We had good organisation but the first goal was a sign of it, everyone just backing off and just letting players run into the box and that kind of - it is only two or three yards but it is two or three yards of intent to go and stop moments like that.”
A miserable day in north London
Good morning. Joe Thomas here, logging on after a loooong day yesterday. That was a tough old day, and in some ways it was tough even though I expected it to be. For all of Everton's injury issues and Spurs' strength, I at least hoped to see them make their opponents work to beat them. Instead, this game was essentially over after 25 minutes and even by then Spurs could have been well out of sight.
I know I am lucky to travel to watch the Blues, but the train back getting into Lime Street an hour late was not helpful either. Last week, after the Brighton defeat, I was stuck at a Merseyrail station for 90 minutes. So on and off the pitch, two difficult days already this season.
Plenty to get on with but I will start the blog by pointing you to my thoughts on the game - here is my overview
