Manchester United proved once again on Sunday that they are a million miles away from challenging for the Premier League title.
Sir Alex Ferguson was watching on from the stands at Old Trafford as Liverpool outclassed Manchester United 3-0.
Going into the game, many were unsure as to what they were going to get from the under-fire Erik ten Hag and Liverpool’s new boss, Arne Slot in what was his first big test.
But, by the full-time whistle, Liverpool fans were cheering a new dawn after Jurgen Klopp’s exit and it was the same old same old for Manchester United.
Peter Schmeichel shared that he sat next to Sir Alex during the game and how the team is a world apart from where it used to be under the Scotman’s stewardship.
Manchester United beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final last season and the supporters were hoping it would be the light to get the club back on track.
After months of deliberation, ten Hag was handed a new deal, but after only three Premier League games, it is looking and feeling like a huge mistake already.
Casemiro had a game to forget, as the home team were torn apart by a vibrant, ruthless and energetic Liverpool team.
Schmeichel added that it was ‘really sad’ sitting next to his former manager and watching Manchester United capitulate in the manner in which they did, as he told Premier League Productions (01/09/24 at 6:40 pm).
Life after Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United
“I was sat with Sir Alex today, it was really sad,” said Schmeichel. “What he did for this football club. Everything that we enjoyed. The great times. Everything.
“To sit with him and he is watching this. That, for me, is really, really sad that he is watching that. He did something really extraordinary with this football club. All of that is not there anymore.”

Arne Slot and Erik ten Hag
The issue for ten Hag is that many are still trying to work out his style of play and what he is bringing to the table.
Paul Scholes lauded Slot and how he is already looking comfortable at his new club, with his fellow countryman still looking out of his depth in the Premier League.

Given that the powers that be at Old Trafford have penned him down to a new deal and backed him in the summer transfer market, then they have to continue with him for a few months yet, even if things continue to go wrong.
The international break will do Man United the world of good, but it’s trips to Southampton and Crystal Palace in the Premier League after that.
