His dreadful attempt saw him shank the ball away from goal

Dembele, 27, came off the bench to replace Michael Olise shortly before the hour mark.

But his most notable contribution came when he made a hash of an Antoine Griezmann cross.

The Atletico Madrid playmaker, 33, whipped a brilliant ball into Dembele who was found behind the Italy defence inside the penalty area.

Yet he then proceeded to embarrassingly shank his effort off his left shin as it spun behind him.

And fans on social media could not believe the disastrous attempt.

One said: "Bro has -1 shots on goal 😭."

Another added: "Dembele ruining what would’ve been a perfect Griezmann assist, he’s not a real footballer."

A third replied: "Honestly he should've gotten a yellow for that."

While a fourth responded: "No wonder people say he is hard to defend against, no defender could see that coming."

Dembele left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain last year in a deal worth £43.5million.

Fans convinced Cristiano Ronaldo made major mistake before penalty shootout that could have cost Portugal vs France

He has scored seven goals and assisted 17 in 45 games since joining the Ligue 1 champions.

He also has 50 caps for France but has netted just five times for his country - none of which have come in major tournaments.

Meanwhile, Italy's win over France saw a majestic assist from Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for the visitors' opening goal.

But there were fears for Arsenal new boy Riccardo Calafiori after he limped off injured following a freak tackle by Dembele.
