Liverpool have reportedly received no indication from Martin Zubimendi that he is willing to leave Real Sociedad in January.

The 25-year-old Spain international was on the brink of signing for Liverpool in the summer but eventually decided to reject interest from Anfield to stay with his boyhood club.

And following Sociedad's poor start to the La Liga season, last week it was claimed that Zubimendi was willing to move to Anfield in the New Year. However, that is reportedly not the case and nothing has changed regarding the midfielder's situation.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold has fired a warning to Liverpool as his contract at Anfield ticks down.

The Reds defender is into the final 12 months of his contract on Merseyside and will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January. Alexander-Arnold admitted that he wanted to be the captain of Liverpool but says it is 'out of his hands'.

He is one of three high-profile contract issues for Liverpool as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also face uncertain periods. All three of their current terms expire in July.

Teenager Trey Nyoni could be one of several young stars to be handed minutes against West Ham on Wednesday night as Liverpool begin their defence of the Carabao Cup.

The 17-year-old, who moved to Anfield from Leicester City last summer, has enjoyed a rapid ascent through the club's ranks and impressed during this summer's tour of the United States.

As a result, he could be named on the bench at Anfield on Wednesday night, with Tyler Morton and Federico Chiesa potential receiving their first starts of the season.

Arne Slot told Liverpool have 'struck gold' with £34m signing after transfer snub

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright believes Liverpool have "struck gold" with Ryan Gravenberch after missing out on a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Arne Slot had eyed Spain international Zubimendi as the first signing of a new era at Anfield as the Reds agreed a £51m deal with the La Liga outfit. But the Euro 2024 winner opted against a move to Liverpool to remain with his boyhood club in San Sebastian.

After missing out on Zubimendi though, Slot opted against pursuing a new midfield addition and instead decided to deploy Gravenberch - a £34m signing from Bayern Munich last summer - in the No.6 position. In the first six games of the season, the Dutchman has been the pick of the bunch for Liverpool in wins against Ipswich Town, Manchester United and AC Milan.

And footballer-turned-pundit Wright believes Liverpool's failed pursuit of Zubimendi was a sliding doors moment that has served them well.

“You could say that with Zubimendi not going through, they could have really unearthed the one for themselves now,” said the former Arsenal forward on The Kelly and Wright Show.

“Because when you watch those games, and obviously, we want to see him against the maybe the top three, top four, and if he’s putting in those kind of performances, then obviously Liverpool have like struck gold because he seems to have everything, He has got all the attributes.”

Next up for Liverpool is the visit of West Ham United at Anfield on Wednesday, where they will begin their defence of the League Cup.

Arne Slot makes admission over Federico Chiesa full debut as major Liverpool injury update shared

Arne Slot has confirmed Caoimhin Kelleher will start for Liverpool in their Carabao Cup clash with West Ham United while Federico Chiesa could also be handed his full debut for the club.

Kelleher impressed between the sticks in the Reds' 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday after Alisson Becker was ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Brazilian will also be absent against the Hammers on Wednesday night, with Slot confirming it is "tight" whether he will be fit to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium this weekend.

Slot also suggested that summer signing Federico Chiesa could start on Wednesday night after making his Anfield debut off the bench at the weekend. The Italian joined the Reds in a £10m switch from Juventus but the Liverpool boss admitted it could be some time before he is able to play a full 90 minutes.

Follow Arne Slot's pre-West Ham United press conference at the AXA Training Centre

Liverpool kick off their defence of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night with a all Premier League clash against West Ham United at Anfield.

And the Reds will hope to win the competition for an 11th time after their dramatic victory over Chelsea in last year's Wembley final, in which Virgil van Dijk scored a last-gasp extra-time winner for an injury hit side that included a number of Academy talents.

There may be more young players included in the third round tie against Julien Lopetegui's side, who come to Anfield on the back of a very difficult start to the new season.

Arne Slot will give updates on Liverpool team news, Alisson Becker's hamstring injury and may well be asked about the contract situations of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah when he takes his pre-match press conference.

The ECHO's Beth Lindop is in place at the AXA Training Centre to bring you live updates and reaction, here.

No change in Martin Zubimendi's Real Sociedad situation

That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims Liverpool have received no indication that Martin Zubimendi would be willing to join the club in January if the opportunity emerged. The Spain international turned down a £51m move to Anfield in July.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "Zubimendi remains a player of interest for Liverpool. The board, the directors and also the manager, Arne Slot, approved Zubimendi as a target. But now, they understand that nothing is new.

"Nothing is fresh. Nothing has changed, despite some reports in Spain saying that Zubimendi was already regretting his decision. Maybe in January, he can leave, but at the moment, Liverpool have received no indications from Zubimendi or from Real Sociedad about any change.

"So, this is why Arne Slot didn't want to comment. Now it's one month, almost a bit more than this, since we had the Zubimendi saga on the market, and Liverpool don't have the feeling that anything has changed.

"So if something will change in the future, we will see, and we will update you on what happens between Liverpool and Zubimendi. But as of today, the feeling from Liverpool is, we are happy with what we have."

What Liverpool have in store for Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha this week as quiet plans continue

Paul Gorst takes a look at what players could be in action against West Ham United tomorrow, with Trey Nyoni knocking on the door for first-team opportunities.

In a week that sees Liverpool involved in two cup competitions, the squad selections across Tuesday and Wednesday evening will prove instructive for many within the club's Academy ranks. The first of the double bill will see the young Reds return to Bristol Street Motors Trophy action when they travel to Harrogate's Exercise Stadium looking to improve on a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Crewe Alexandra in the same competition nearly a month ago.

Twenty-four hours later, Arne Slot will likely make a raft of changes to his senior side when the Reds begin their defence of the Carabao Cup at home to West Ham United and for so many of the youngsters at the club, opportunity could be about to knock.

Perhaps none more so than for Trey Nyoni, whose rapid ascent continued over the summer when he was part of the club's pre-season tour of the United States.

The 17-year-old only signed from Leicester City last year but looked the part on his Stateside cameos, particularly against Real Betis in Pittsburgh, where he replaced the injured Curtis Jones in the first half and had a hand in Dominik Szoboszlai's winning goal.

Nyoni became the youngest player of all time at Liverpool to feature in an FA Cup tie when he was introduced off the bench for the 3-0 win against Southampton at Anfield in late February. He became the second youngest across all competitions when he came on at Anfield aged 16 years and 243 days and, having been given the captaincy for the club's UEFA Youth League campaign this term, the classy midfielder is continuing to take steady strides forward.

Virgil van Dijk sends clear challenge to Darwin Nunez

Virgil van Dijk believes keeping a level head will now help Darwin Nunez really take flight at Liverpool after the striker opened his account for the campaign in Saturday's 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

And the captain thinks Nunez's price tag means there will always be pressure on him to perform after the big-money forward marked his first start of the season with a stunning strike.

“If you want to be successful in different competitions we need a very good squad and now it's time when we are rotating they have to perform and today showed; Darwin scored a fantastic goal," Van Dijk said.

"You see the boys who came in after being rested in midweek produced again and that's what we need, it's a sign of a very good football team. It's the start of the season so there's a lot to happen but it's a good sign.

“Any striker, on the bench or who has a lack of confidence, works their socks off to be successful. He got a chance to be the starting striker today and he worked very hard for that goal.

"He scored a very good goal but he worked hard defensively when we didn't have the ball and those are the things that we need from the whole team, whether you start or coming in.

Bernardo Silva takes aim at Arsenal with brutal Liverpool comparison

Bernardo Silva has slammed Arsenal's approach to Sunday's Premier League game with Manchester City - and claimed the club have a more competitive rivalry with Liverpool

"The difference? I don't know. Maybe that Liverpool have already won the Premier League, Arsenal haven't. That Liverpool have won the Champions League, Arsenal haven't," said Silva.

"Liverpool always faced us face to face to try to win the games, so from this perspective the games against Arsenal haven't been like the ones we had and have against Liverpool. So yes, maybe a different rivalry."

Owen and Defoe blown away by Nunez moment

Darwin Nunez scored his first goal of the season during Liverpool's Premier League victory against Bournemouth at Anfield.

Jermaine Defoe and Michael Owen were both left stunned by the strike from the Reds striker.

Speaking with Premier League Productions at half-time, former Reds striker Owen - who netted 150 career top-flight goals, 118 of which were for the club - commented: "Absolute sublime, I like that. What a finish."

Defoe, himself the scorer of 162 Premier League goals to sit ninth on the all-time list, added: "It’s an unbelievable finish. That too on his weak foot."

Up next for the Reds

So, another weekend of Premier League football comes to a close. A lot has gone the way of the Reds after a disappointing one last weekend, so plenty to smile about.

There is still a handful of matches to come before the next international break, which look a little like this:

25/09: v West Ham (H) - Carabao Cup Round 3

28/09: v Wolves (A) - Premier League GW6

02/10: v Bologna (H) - Champions League GW2

05/10: v Crystal Palace (A) - Premier League GW7

'Don't get dragged into it' - Virgil van Dijk sends clear challenge to Darwin Nunez at Liverpool

Nunez was given the nod ahead of Diogo Jota at the weekend by head coach Arne Slot and added to Luis Diaz's quick-fire brace with a superb, left-footed effort that arched past Cherries goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and went in off the post after 37 minutes at Anfield.

The Uruguay international has been made to be patient for his first real opportunity this term but took his chance with a purposeful performance as Slot's side briefly went top of the Premier League with their fourth win of the campaign.

Van Dijk says he was impressed with colleague's leading of the line and understands why the No.9 remains a firm fan favourite at Anfield but the centre-back has also challenged Nunez to continue in the same vein going forward and revealing the initial £64m sum paid to Benfica over two years ago means he is expected to produce the goods regularly.

“If you want to be successful in different competitions we need a very good squad and now it's time when we are rotating they have to perform and today showed; Darwin scored a fantastic goal," Van Dijk said.

Jurgen Klopp made 'number one target' for first job after Liverpool exit as new timeline emerges

Ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is Germany's top choice to replace Julian Nagelsmann if the former Bayern Munich coach departs after the 2026 World Cup. Klopp bid farewell to Anfield this summer after a remarkable nine-year stint that saw him clinch Liverpool's first Premier League title in 30 years, along with the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the Champions League.

With Arne Slot spearheading a new era at Liverpool, Klopp is now eyeing a fresh chapter - although he has previously confessed he might retire from management altogether after disclosing his need for a break from the game.

Sporting director and legendary ex-striker Rudi Voller discussed the possibility of Klopp taking over in the future and stated there would be "no way" they could ignore him should Nagelsmann leave post the next World Cup reports the Mirror, who claim he is Germany's 'number one target' if the current boss leaves the country's setup.

Voller expressed that Klopp would be the standout candidate if he desired the job - with his future plans still unknown.

"I don't even know what Jurgen would like to do again," he said, speaking to Aktuelle Sportstudio.

"If Julian Nagelsmann were to decide at some point that he would rather coach a top club again - then of course there is no way around Jurgen Klopp. If he wants to."

ICYMI: FA 'launch investigation' after Liverpool defender makes 'very serious' biting allegation

The Football Association have reportedly opened an investigation into claims Liverpool loanee Owen Beck was bitten during Blackburn Rovers' goalless draw with Preston North End on Sunday.

The left-back was sent off by referee Matthew Donohue for kicking out at Duane Holmes a minute from stoppage time in what was a fiery Lancashire derby.

However, during the melee that followed, television footage appeared to show Beck being bitten on the back of the neck by Preston forward Milutin Osmajic.

Beck was then shown clearly telling the official "he bit me" on the live coverage and the FA have now opened up an investigation into the incident, according to The Mirror, with Blackburn boss John Eustace backing up the claims from the 22-year-old on-loan Liverpool defender in comments made after the game.

In quotes carried by the Lancashire Telegraph, Eustace said: "I haven't really seen it, he went to clear the ball and possibly caught the lad. He's got a big bite mark on the back of his neck. It's a shame the referee didn't see that as well.

"He's got a big bite mark. He has been in and shown the lads. He's very disappointed to be sent off and you don't expect him to have that either.

"He's a bit quiet in there and a bit shaken up. I don't know if he spoke to the referee, I'm not sure if it was before or after the red. He might want to speak to the officials about it.

Kelleher: We are finding our feet under Slot

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Kelleher said of Saturday's 3-0 win over Bournemouth: “Delighted to get the win, I thought we played really well. It was a great performance.

“I think we were obviously very disappointed with what happened last weekend but all we can do is bounce back as a team and I think we have done that in the last two games.

“So, we just need to keep this momentum now and keep the confidence. We all love working under the new manager and things are really coming together now so hopefully we can keep the results going, and the performances.”

Marc Guehi to 'decide' Crystal Palace future in 2025

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi will reportedly decide his future in 2025 as he continues to be linked with moves to Liverpool and Newcastle United.

England international Guehi was the subject of four bids from the Magpies in the summer but, ultimately, remained at Selhurst Park as Palace stood firm in their valuation of the defender after losing Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen.

And according to Caught Offside, Guehi will decide his future in 2025 as next June sees him enter the final year of his Palace contract.

Silva takes swipe at Arsenal with Liverpool point

Bernardo Silva has slammed Arsenal's approach to Sunday's Premier League game with Manchester City - and claimed the club have a more competitive rivalry with Liverpool.

John Stones' 98th-minute equaliser rescued a point for City after the Gunners had taken a 2-1 lead at the Etihad on the stroke of half-time. But after being reduced to 10 men just seconds after Gabriel had headed them ahead as Leandro Trossard was shown a second yellow card by referee Michael Oliver, Mikel Arteta's side employed several dark arts in the hope of securing a first Premier League win at the Etihad since 2015.

Those antics, though, left Silva, who knows what he takes to win the Premier League having done so five times with Manchester City since 2017, pulling no punches as he launched a scathing assessment of Arsenal's style of play after goals from Erling Haaland, Ricardo Calefirori, Gabriel and Stones had seen the points shared in East Manchester.

"There was only one team that came to play football. The other came to play to the limits of what was possible to do and allowed by the referee, unfortunately. But at the end we got a draw, the best we could get considering the context of the last moments of the match," said the midfielder.

"We're not happy as we wanted the three points, but personally I'm happy with the way we came to play and faced the game. I'm glad we always enter the pitch to try to win every match."

"It all started in the very first second. In the first action we realised what was going to happen. We had a player injured after they sent him to the ground twice in 10 minutes. We had a goal conceded after the referee called our captain and then didn't allow him to recover his position. The second goal is already their usual block to our keeper, which was allowed by the referee.

"Then the referee allowed a sequence of time-wasting events. The thing that bothers me the most is having a lot of meetings with the FA at the beginning of each season. They tell us they will control this kind of situation and will stop them, but in the end it doesn't have any worth. They say a lot but nothing happens."

And the midfielder wasn't done there, as before departing the Etihad he had time to take aim at Arsenal's lack of success since Mikel Arteta took over as manager in December 2019.

"The difference? I don't know," added Silva. "Maybe that Liverpool have already won the Premier League, Arsenal haven't. That Liverpool have won the Champions League, Arsenal haven't.

"Liverpool always faced us face to face to try to win the games, so from this perspective the games against Arsenal haven't been like the ones we had and have against Liverpool. So yes, maybe a different rivalry."

Trent Alexander-Arnold coy on Liverpool future

Trent Alexander-Arnold remained coy on his Liverpool future when speaking to the ECHO - and other reporters - after Saturday's 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old laid on an assist for Luis Diaz in the first half of Saturday's game as the Reds bounced back from last weekend's shock defeat to Nottingham Forest.

However, it was off the field where Alexander-Arnold made the headlines for what he did - or rather didn't - say after the 3-0 win against the Cherries.

"For now I am completely focused on this season and how many goals, assists and clean sheets I can get and hopefully do enough to help us win the league," said Alexander-Arnold.

"I have always said I want to captain the club, that is an aim of mine and a goal of mine, (but) whether that happens is out of my hands.

"Look, I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public. And this one won’t be either.

"I want to be a Liverpool player this season (as a minimum) is what I will say."

Good morning

Hello and welcome!

You don't have to wait long for Liverpool though, as they're back in action as early as Wednesday when West Ham visit Anfield in the Carabao Cup.

Jurgen Klopp discussed for next job after Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp will be in no rush to return to management having left Liverpool this summer for a well-deserved break. But, the German national team clearly have eyes on his appointment down the line.

Sporting director Rudi Voller was asked if the former Reds coach would be in consideration if Julian Nagelsmann were to ever depart, and this is what he said.

"I don't even know what Jurgen would like to do again," Voller admitted while speaking to Aktuelle Sportstudio. "If Julian Nagelsmann were to decide at some point that he would rather coach a top club again - then of course there is no way around Jurgen Klopp. If he wants to."

And so it ends...

Man City v Arsenal has come to a conclusion, and again it was some end.

10-man Arsenal were sitting back for the entirety of the second period hoping to escape with three points, with 26 shots to one in the favour of the hosts. In the end they succumbed to a 98th-minute John Stones equaliser, bundled in after a corner rebounded.

As for Liverpool, this is how the Premier League table stands following that result:

1st - Man City, 13 points, goal difference = 8

2nd - Liverpool, 12 points, goal difference = 9

3rd - Aston Villa, 12 points, goal difference = 3

4th - Arsenal, 11 points, goal difference = 5

Giorgi Mamardashvili heroics

On a weekend where Liverpool were without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson, the man they signed to potentially replace the Brazilian - Giorgi Mamardashvili - was proving just why the Reds made that move in the summer with his latest performance over in Spain.

The 23-year-old, purchased from Valencia where he has remained on loan for the 2024/25 campaign, made three saves and won the MVP of the Match award in his team's 2-0 win against Girona, according to LaLigaExtra on X. It is the second match this season he has picked up the award now, which should be enough to get the Reds exciting about their new recruit.

How excited are you to see Mamardashvili at Anfield?

Trent Alexander-Arnold admits 'harsh' talks with Arne Slot as new Liverpool target emerges

Trent Alexander-Arnold has spoken about his contract talks with Liverpool, reiterating that the process will remain entirely under wraps, as previous extensions with the club have done.

The vice-captain's contract runs out at the end of the current campaign with Real Madrid constantly linked with interest. As the clock ticks down, these rumours only intensify but 'the situation is out of his hands', says the man in question.

Asked what his motivations are, the full-back says he has always had the goal of captaining his boyhood club, and winning trophies will be key in his thinking.

Second half beginning

Hopefully the second half is as lively as the first, with Liverpool watching on to find out the result.

Before the break the Gunners managed to complete a turnaround and now lead 2-1 thanks to Gabriel, scoring another headed goal. However, Leandro Trossard then went and got himself sent off, kicking the ball away and picking up a second yellow card.

Mikel Arteta's side are currently top of the league at Liverpool's expense, leading 13 points to 12. City are then trailing the Reds on goal difference. A City equaliser would push Arsenal back down to fifth, but put City top by a single point. Let's see how this one plays out...

A lively opening 30 minutes

This is some contest between Liverpool's potential title rivals.

It started off with VAR being forced into a decision with less than three seconds played. Rodri was on the deck holding his face as a result of contact with Kai Havertz, but VAR saw no foul play. Erling Haaland then quickly put the hosts ahead.

However, Rodri has since been forced off with injury and Riccardo Calafiori equalised with a thunderous strike.

One to watch

There is one more match to go in the Premier League this weekend, and it might be one you Reds have an eye on given the potential importance in the long run.

Man City vs Arsenal is just getting underway at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin de Bruyne joining the hosts' injury list and therefore missing out. The visitors are boosted by the return of Declan Rice, but are still without Martin Odegaard.

Either one or both will be dropping points, so who will come out on top? We'll keep an eye on the action and how it impacts Liverpool's place at the top of the Premier League.
