Aston Villa take on Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park in the Carabao Cup third round this evening (8pm kick-off).

Unai Emery's side come into the cup tie on the back of four consecutive victories in all competitions, while League One side Wycombe have made a steady start to their season, winning three of their first six league games.

The Chairboys advanced to this stage of the Carabao Cup after away wins over Northampton Town and Swansea City. Villa, meanwhile, didn't play in the second round because they are one of the seven Premier League clubs playing in Europe this season.

Villa are looking to reach round four for the first time since 2020 and were knocked out by Everton last term, losing 2-1 at home to the Toffees.

Villa will be without captain John McGinn after he suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Wolves last time out. Emery explained after full-time that McGinn faces a period on the sidelines and the Villa manager is expected to make a host of changes from the team which came back from behind to secure a fourth Premier League win on Saturday.

Stay tuned for build-up, team news, live coverage and post-match reaction with our Villa corespondent John Townley.

Final thoughts

Unai Emery has named a youthful squad for tonight’s Carabao Cup clash with Wycombe, but there’s still international talent in the starting XI.

Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley, Ian Maatsen, Leon Bailey, Jhon Duran and Emi Buendia are all starting for Villa. They have enough to get through the 90 minutes. If it is a draw, then we will go straight to a penalty shoot-out.

The players are about to walk back out on the pitch for kick-off...

Torres: Villa improve on last season

“There is no doubt Unai Emery is one of, if not, the best manager in the Premier League. Who else has four Europa League titles? His record in European competition speaks for itself," he told Betano Sports.

"I think this shows the true quality of him as a manager. His preparation ahead of the game is so good to inform us exactly what to do and what the opponent will do. We will always be confident of beating any team with him in the dugout.

"As a team, we are prepared to better last season’s finish of fourth. We have the talent in the squad to do so and improve even further. We are working so hard, and we have Champions League football to manage also now, so we need to keep a good balance to do well in each competition. We all know what we are capable of and we really feel we can go further this season."

Maatsen on Villa's Wolves comeback

"We came back - normally you want a clean sheet - but we came back strong. We kept believing. The crowd kept supporting us and when you come to Villa Park it’s such an amazing atmosphere. I was very pleased with all the boys, all the fans and happy with the performance.

"Any team that comes here needs to feel the pressure, so that it’s hard to win or get points here. Today and last week again, it’s pleasing.

"We trust in our belief. And our ability. We kept the ball moving. We played strong. We didn’t rush, we made good decisions. And you see we are going to create a lot of chances. We scored three amazing goals. The coach will be very happy. We kept our character. He was just pleased. We have to keep going being consistent, but we’ll do it."

Adomah gives his take on Villa's rise

Aston Villa promotion hero Albert Adomah admits he couldn't have foreseen his old side's rise into the Champions League materialising so quickly after leaving the club upon their return to the Premier League in 2019. Adomah spent three years at Villa and, at the third time of asking, contributed to restoring their top flight status.

Adomah, who has since returned to the West Midlands and is playing for League Two promotion chasers Walsall, recorded 11 assists under Roberto Di Matteo and Steve Bruce in Villa's first season in the Championship. He ended the second year, which culminated in play-off heartache at Wembley, by clinching the club's top scorer award with 15 goals.

It proved to be third time lucky for Villa, and for a host of players who'd be helping to lift the club back into the top flight without joining them on the adventure; Adomah left that summer, along with Alan Hutton, Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak, among others. Now, as he watches from afar, he concedes he's been taken aback just how quickly under NSWE his old club have risen.

Maatsen makes first start

"Of course, it’s a bit difficult [not to start]," Maatsen admitted after the win at Wolves. "But there will be opportunities. And I have to be ready to make an impact and today I did that to help my teammates. Maybe next time is my time. I just have to be ready.

"Every time I have to be ready. I work hard. And we push each other. Today it was my turn to come on and make an impact. Maybe next week, it’s the other way around. I’m just happy to get minutes. It’s still a process.

"I’m happy to be at Villa. There’s a lot to learn. I’m easy. I’m composed. I’m just trying to do my best. Every minute show the quality I have. There are a lot of games. So everyone who starts or comes off the bench, there’s a lot of fresh energy off the bench. We need to be ready and give our best."

Torres' confident Villa warning should make rivals uneasy

Pau Torres considers Unai Emery to be among the best - if not the best - managers in the Premier League right now - and, as such, Aston Villa head into every game, including those games against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, of the belief that they can win in any environment or scenario.

Centre half Torres has been a revelation for Villa since joining the club from Villarreal - where he'd previously worked and won the Europa League under Emery - last summer and he proved to be a big miss at the heart of defence when he suffered injury issues in the winter. Now, he is very much a fixture at the heart of the defence.

Villa beat City and Arsenal at home in the space of a week and then ended Arsenal's title hopes when they inflicted a second defeat on the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium towards the end of last season. For Torres, former Arsenal boss Emery is among the managerial elite and he can envisage Villa knocking more traditional big clubs off their perch under his stewardship.

Emery set to ring changes

"It is clear the priority is the Premier League, 38 matches, through it we have to get our first objective, try and be in the top seven and be consistent in playing in Europe, that is the most difficult way through the Premier League.

"The second most difficult is the Champions League and then we have to try to find something important in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. The FA Cup is maybe more important than the Carabao Cup, but the Carabao Cup is a trophy and we are going to compete.

"Of course, I am going to change some players but I am going to prepare a plan to win and to get a good way in this competition in case we can get through three matches and get an opportunity to fight for a trophy through it."
