Paul Pogba leads the tributes as Raphael Varane announces shock retirement
Former Real Madrid and Man Utd star Raphael Varane has announced his immediate retirement having injured knee in debut for Como last month with host of stars paying tributes
Paul Pogba has led the tributes after former Manchester United star Raphael Varane announced his shock retirement.
The French defender, 31, announced on Tuesday night that he was calling it a day - having hurt a knee in his debut for Serie A side Como, whom he joined after departing Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer.
And Pogba, who won the 2018 World Cup alongside Varane, was among his former team-mates to congratulate the centre half on his career.
“What a pleasure to have shared this moment with you,” Pogba wrote, alongside comments from Scott McTominay, Diogo Dalot and Ibrahima Konate.

He spent a decade with the La Liga giants, winning 18 trophies including four Champions League titles.
In a statement, Real said: "Raphael Varane will forever remain in the hearts of all Real Madrid fans as one of the greatest centre-backs in the history of Real Madrid and for always representing the values of our club."
He then moved to United in the summer of 2021 for £34m, making 95 appearances and winning two cups despite a number of injuries. "You represented our colours with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford," the club said. "We thank you for your humility, leadership and commitment. May these qualities serve you well in your next venture."
He also retired from playing for France after the Qatar World Cup and has spoken about struggling to recover from concussion while warning against the risks of repeatedly heading the ball.
In the statement announcing his retirement, Varane said: "I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.
"Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.
"I have no regrets, I wouldn't change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it. I hope I have made you all proud."
Varane will remain at Como in an off-field capacity with details yet to be confirmed.
