Henrik Larsson proves he's still a Celtic diehard as Elena Sadiku hints at hidden role in Champions League charge

Swede dreams are made of this as Celtic women stand on the verge of Champions League history

Henrik Larsson will be among those keeping an eye on Celtic’s Champions League play-off tie this evening.

Elena Sadiku’s side are out to make history by reaching the group stage for the first time. And the Swede has revealed her countryman, Hoops legend Larsson, has been keeping a close eye as the Ghirls edged through the qualifiers. Sadiku said: “He is supportive and follows our results – and our Instagram stories. His support has been great to the women’s game and I am a big fan of his.”

Sadiku also hinted there had been a supportive message shared with the group ahead of arguably the biggest game in their history. “Maybe I have…” she said on if she’s had any words of encouragement from Larsson. Sadiku however was less coy on what it would mean to her to deliver Champions League football against the Ukrainians. Her side hold a 1-0 lead from Sunday’s first leg, a cushion that could and should have been more commanding given the chances created.

She said: “It would mean we are among the top 16 teams in Europe. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. It would mean so much to get there. It would be the top moment in my career.”

Indeed, midfielder Natalie Ross is hoping to move a few people to tears tonight. She said: “My dad always comes to games and if I were to score, he’d probably cry!

“I was saying to Elena, ‘Imagine playing at Celtic Park, in front of home fans and in the Champions League’.”
