Rob McElhenney has revealed the secret to his and Ryan Reynolds' winning formula as Wrexham owners.

The A-list duo took over the reins in 2020, and it's been a rollercoaster ride for Wrexham ever since. The Red Dragons returned to the EFL after 15 years away in 2023 before sealing back-to-back promotions to League One last term. Their Hollywood-style rise has been seen up-close through the Welcome to Wrexham docu-series, earning the club worldwide fame, thanks in part to their famous owners.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is eyeing up a hat-trick of promotions, although they're currently second in League One to Birmingham City, who've got their own celeb star in Tom Brady. The NFL legend joined the Blues board in 2023 and sat alongside David Beckham when Wrexham travelled to St. Andrew's last month. Before the match, McElhenney admitted to Brady that he and Reynolds are wise enough to leave the Wrexham dressing room alone.

"Ryan and I very specifically stay out of the locker room," McElhenney said to Brady. "I mean, we go in and talk to the guys but we don't have pep talks but we try and stay away from all football operations.

"That's got to be a competitive advantage for [Brady] to walk into those rooms and when you talk to those guys, you're one of five people probably on planet earth that everybody in every locker room will listen to."

By contrast, Brady told McElhenney that he believed his biggest asset was to pass on some of his sporting knowledge to the Blues squad. Despite their different approaches, McElhenney gave Brady a piece of advice and showed his appreciation for English football.

"For sure, listen more than you talk. Ryan and I, who talk for a living, we recognise that this is all about the community. It's all about the people that come to the stadiums and have been filling these stadiums for hundreds of years," McElhenney said. "The NFL was founded in the 1920s and [Birmingham City] have been around 150 years. Wrexham was founded in 1864. While the US was in the middle of a civil war, they founded a football club over here."

Since their 3-1 defeat at St. Andrew's, Wrexham have picked up four points from their last two league games, while the Blues extended their win-streak in League One to six matches against Rotherham and Peterborough. The promotion rivals are separated by two points, though Wrexham have played a game more, and McElhenney is already looking forward to their next meeting at the Racecourse Ground.

Showing a touch of class after Wrexham's loss to Birmingham, McElhenney took to X, posting: "Thanks Tom Brady and Birmingham City for being such great hosts. You've got a hell of a side. See you in January."
