Chris Davies sends a clear message to his Birmingham City players after Charlton setback
Chris Davies was speaking after Birmingham City slipped to defeat at Charlton Athletic in League One
Chris Davies wants to use Birmingham City’s first League One defeat of the season as a wake up call.
Charlton Athletic ended Blues’ unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 scoreline at The Valley, courtesy of Matty Godden’s 54th minute strike.
“I thought we weren’t at our normal level,” Davies reflected. “Throughout the game we didn’t have our normal energy, zip and fluency. The three games in the eight days obviously caught up with us a little bit and we suffered, but Charlton also had that so it’s not an excuse. We had an element of control in terms of possession but we never converted it into meaningful chances or dangerous situations.
“It was a bouncing ball from a long throw and a soft goal. You can’t let that ball bounce and you can’t let the opposition swivel and volley it in.”

Blues have two weeks to reflect with their next League One fixture coming after the international break. The team will face Shrewsbury Town in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday once their wounds have been licked.
Davies added: “From my point of view, as I said to the players, they’ve had an excellent start with what they’ve achieved, but as I’ve said since day one this is a very difficult league and if you think you’re better than League One it can be a real challenge.
"I’m not saying that they do but the challenge we face is we’re going to come to grounds like this that aren’t easy. We need to reflect on this and put it right.”
