Joelinton's unseen moment of class after Gordon penalty miss and Dan Burn's refreshing honesty

It was the tale of two penalty incidents at Goodison Park as Newcastle United accept solid point on Merseyside

Newcastle United star Joelinton was quick to shield Anthony Gordon from any blame after his penalty miss at Goodison Park.

The Brazilian international wants United to move on from the stalemate on Merseyside and feels that Gordon has nothing to prove to those within the four walls of the dressing room. Newcastle went on to create numerous opportunities to win it at Everton and Joelinton, as a senior member of the squad, feels that Gordon has nothing to prove.

Joelinton said: "We know Anthony, he tries his best every time he is on the pitch. He wanted to score and unfortunately, he didn't but he helped the team so much.

"I am sure he will be disappointed but it is not a problem. It has happened. We move on because he is a great player."

Dan Burn felt he had a narrow escape on penalty incident - despite TV replays showing he was in the clear

The game proved to be a tale of two penalty incidents, one was given, rightly and missed. The other not given, rightly, and debated long into the night on Merseyside.

But TV replays showed clearly that Dominic Calvert-Lewin had in fact kicked the back of Burn's leg before rolling to the floor. Burn though believed that Craig Pawson might have made an instant decision at the time.

He said: "I think it was probably one of them that if the referee gives it, it probably doesn’t get overturned. I felt Dominic kicked me but I’ve not seen it back."

Positive signs are showing again for United with Eddie Howe delighted despite 0-0 draw

Eddie Howe feels his team are edging closer to the side that finished in a Champions League slot two years ago. Putting aside the Fulham debacle at Craven Cottage, Newcastle have demonstrated they are capable of showing up at away ground and not throwing in the towel.

After the game, Howe said: "Manchester City and this game is much more like ourselves and hopefully we can continue to improve in the next group of games."

However, they must now back all that up with a home encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion. A victory would put them on an impressive points tally with 12 on the board already.
