Monchi may be forced into Aston Villa transfer rethink as 'bidding war' claim made
The latest Aston Villa transfer news as rumours suggest Jacob Ramsey is subject to building interest from rival Premier League clubs
Aston Villa already warned clubs off midfielder Jacob Ramsey when the transfer window was open this summer - are they prepared to do the same again in 2025?
Despite his recent injury setback, the 23-year-old has enjoyed a bright start to the campaign. His personal highlight will have been helping Villa kick off their Champions League in style as one of the goalscorers in Bern against Young Boys on opening night.
But that achievement wouldn't have been possible had the club cashed in on Ramsey during the summer months. As a homegrown talent there was a real possibility they would be forced into a reluctant sale to help comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), though funds were able to be raised via other means.
"If we wanted to sell Jacob Ramsey, we would have sold him already because we had different offers from different clubs," club president of football operations Monchi said. At the time Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur were credited as the midfielder's most persistent admirers.
The Spaniard continued: "But Unai [ Emery ] has big confidence in him and I think that Jacob can continue to improve his level. Last season was difficult for him because of three injuries, but Unai thinks that with Jacob, Aston Villa is the best thing. He’s convinced 100 per cent that Jacob’s level will increase this season."
The early signs are proving Villa correct, though this may only force Monchi and Emery into the same decision 12 months down the line. According to an update from Mail Plus, interested top-flight clubs are again lining up for a crack at the signing.
TEAMtalk build on this, claiming that a bidding war could be sparked between North London adversaries Arsenal and Spurs. West Midlands chiefs would again be 'reluctant' to allow Ramsey's sale, though as it is suggested he could land the club a profit as low as £30m or as great as £50m, nothing is guaranteed at this stage.
A fight in the transfer market, especially when it is concerning rival teams, could allow Villa to dictate terms throughout the process and net the biggest fee possible out of a suitors' desperation to triumph.
After the close of the summer 2024 window, it was also suggested Italian giants Inter Milan would enter the picture for Ramsey.
