Newcastle United are assessing Kieran Trippier after the player was substituted during Saturday night's stalemate at Everton.

Trippier departed the field treading a little gingerly with 19 minutes left but walked out of Goodison Park without crutches or a protective boot. It is feared that Trippier has suffered a hamstring strain United sources say club medics will wait for the injury to settle down over the international break.

However, there have been some suggestions that Trippier faces a stint on the sidelines for weeks and is an immediate doubt for the first Premier League game after the international break against Brighton & Hove Albion. The 34-year-old had a long break after his participation in the European Championships but has appeared in six top-flight games this season for the seventh-placed Magpies.

The positive for head coach Eddie Howe is that he has plenty of cover with Emil Krafth and Tino Livramento able to slot in comfortably on the right hand side of defence. Trippier missed 79 days last season through injury with calf and groin trouble and was unsettled over the summer transfer window.

Interest from Premier League clubs, Saudi Pro League sides and teams in Europe were a constant narrative for the ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley man. Despite the arrival of performance director James Bunce, drafted in by the board to reduce injuries, Newcastle have had Trippier, Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and Martin Dubravka all injured along with issues the former Monaco man inherited such as Sven Botman, Lewis Miley and Jamaal Lascelles.

Howe had said on Saturday night: "He said he felt something but you're going off gestures and actions. He went down and felt his hamstring but I haven't spoken to him about that."
