Newcastle United star will be licking his lips after latest Lee Carsley experiment

The interim England boss made yet more changes against Finland

Interim England manager Lee Carsley chopped and changed once again on Sunday evening as the Three Lions took on Finland in Helskinki.

After a failed experiment at Wembley just days prior, in which Carsley's side lost to Greece without a recognised striker starting, the former under-21 boss this time opted to play right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold on the opposite side of the pitch at left-back.

That selection decision shows the lack of options England have in that particular position at present. At the same time, Newcastle United's very own Lewis Hall is impressing for his country's under-21 side and will no doubt be licking his lips at yet another bit of tinkering in his position within the senior side.

Hall played the entirety of Friday's 2-1 win over Ukraine's under-21s and was the standout man during last month's international break after a solid start to the season with Newcastle. With club team-mate Tino Livramento called up to recent senior squads, it looks only a matter of time before Hall is handed the same opportunity.

England are crying out for a reliable option at left-back as the FA ponder who to award the manager's job to on a full-time basis. Rico Lewis of Manchester City started in that slot during the loss the Greece, while Chelsea's Levi Colwill was selected in last month's 2-0 win over Ireland.

As for the more established left-backs, Luke Shaw has been his country's starting left-back in the last three tournaments but his fitness is never assured these days. Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell has been exiled at Chelsea and is therefore facing an uncertain England future.

Hall struggled to initally settle at Newcastle but is beginning to make that position his own under Eddie Howe at St James' Park.

"I am really pleased with his development since he has been with us, he is growing in confidence all the time," the Newcastle boss said in September. "Very happy that he has gone away and had his first start for England Under-21s."
