Raging David Gray swerves 'numerous excuses' as Hibs sink to rock bottom as he throws down Hearts gauntlet

Joe Newell saw red as Dundee United sent the Easter Road side to the bottom of the Premiership

Devastated David Gray admitted he was angry over Hibs’ capitulation that has left them at the foot of the table.

But he believes his side would have celebrated a much-needed win over Dundee United if skipper Joe Newell had not seen red late in the game for a second booking. The Easter Road boss said: “I could sit here and make numerous excuses but that’s all they would be. It makes me angry, it’s frustrating, all of the above. If it’s not for the red card I firmly believe we’re going to win the game. Again that’s an excuse because after that we still need to be better, there’s not long left.

“Joe is very disappointed in himself at the moment because I think if we keep 11 players on the pitch, we win the game. Last week as well, when we got back to 1-1, Nectar (Triantis) got sent off, we’d have gone on and won the game, or at least, I don’t see us losing the game.”

Gray expects a response from his side in the Edinburgh derby with Hearts next week. He said: “Derbies take care of themselves.

"It’s always a huge game to look forward to. We’re in a situation where we need to get points and we need to get them quickly – and I know that it’s my responsibility to make sure we do that.”
