Troy Parrott will be hoping to achieve European glory with AZ Alkmaar at the expense of former club Tottenham. The Republic of Ireland international saw his seven-year spell in north London come to an end last summer when he completed a permanent move to the Netherlands.
Since making the switch, Parrott has found the back of the net on a regular basis with 17 goals to his name so far this season. Four of those have come in Europa League action with the 23-year-old instrumental in sealing his side's spot in the last-16 after beating Galatasaray 6-3 on aggregate to set up another clash against Spurs.
The two sides met in the league stage with Richarlison grabbing the only goal of the game in what was a quiet night for Parrott. Ahead of that meeting, Ange Postecoglou delivered a clear verdict on the striker and the notion that he did not get opportunities at Tottenham.
"It is good to see Troy doing well, I think he had a great loan spell in the Dutch League last year," Postecoglou admitted in a press conference. "He is looking like he started his AZ career in positive fashion too so it is great.
"In terms of getting a chance, sometimes in football it is just about timing. We have a striker here mate who was at Chelsea and Liverpool early in his career and he has done alright since. There is a pathway forward for everybody." With a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs, Parrott will be hoping for a different outcome than their first reunion.
While for the next two European games Tottenham will want him to be quiet, more goals and impressive performances should only benefit the club. Upon Spurs and Alkmaar agreeing a £6.7million deal, a 20% sell-on clause was inserted into the transfer, football.london understands.
As for talk of a buyback clause also being present, it is understood that no such term was set in his transfer. However, as he is homegrown, a potential return Spurs down the line is possible with the clause meaning Spurs could reclaim his services at a cut-price.
