Ex-Arsenal star Danny Welbeck 'couldn't feel legs' after Brighton injury left him needing oxygen

Danny Welbeck is a doubt for Brighton's Premier League clash with Wolves on Saturday after being carried from the field on a stretcher at Newcastle last weekend

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has revealed that former Arsenal man Danny Welbeck is a doubt for the side's Premier League clash against Wolves. The seasoned striker was taken off on a stretcher during last weekend’s Newcastle game, after scoring the winner at St James’ Park, and had to make an unscheduled trip to the hospital due to discomfort caused by a collision.

Hurzeler has given the latest in a press conference: "He will train today and then we will see afterwards how this training session went and then we will make a decision," he said.

"He got a hit on his nerve and then you don’t feel the leg for an amount of time, and I think exactly this is what happened."

Welbeck's condition post-match prompted a series of scans which, according to a social media update from the club, allowed him to travel back home with the team. On his X account, Welbeck himself provided an update: "Still a bit sore, but after some extra checks and scan today, I’m pleased to say I should be back in training soon," he wrote.

"Thanks to our medical staff and Newcastle Royal Infirmary A&E for their care and professionalism. Also to the boys for waiting for me to get home! Huge 3 points."

The effects of Welbeck's injury are still being felt, as Hurzeler has disclosed that the player is continuing to experience discomfort. The Brighton boss added: "It’s very painful. It’s still painful. But we have to make a check today in a training session, and then we have to make a lot of treatment for him.

"Our medical and our physios, they are working every hour with him together and to make him fit for the game. This will be the challenge for us, but hopefully everything will be good."

Welbeck spent five years with Arsenal after joining from Manchester United in 2014. In that time he played 126 times, scoring 32 goals for the club.
