THE Commonwealth Games are returning to Glasgow in two years' time.

And the athlete who could well be the nation's poster boy for those Games has shown his true colours - by sporting a retro football shirt in a final of his own sport.

GRAB Duncan Scott in Scotland retro top

Swimming superstar Duncan Scott took to the pool this evening representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the FINA Aquatics World Cup.

And as he prepared for final of the 400m freestyle event in Incheon, South Korea, he chose not to walk out in his usual swimming gear but in an old favourite football top.

The Scottish Swimming Association posted a picture of Scott as he made his way to poolside before the race with him proudly wearing the Scotland national team's 1998 World Cup shirt.

Their caption read: "Speedy Scotsman.

"Duncan Scott sporting an exceptional Scotland shirt at the @WorldAquatics World Cup today, took a superb silver in the 400m Freestyle, just outside his Scottish Record.

"Looks like you’re having lots of fun out there Duncan!"

Scott claimed silver in the event behind China's Zhanle Pan whilst American Kieran Smith came third.

Scott's old rival Danas Rapsys of Lithuania was fourth.

Pan touched home in a time of 3:36.43 with Scott finishing in 3:37.04.

Scott wore the replica jersey in spite of the fact he was competing under the GB flag.

He already scooped the top prize in the 200m freestyle event.

As it stands, 1998 is the last time Scotland reached a World Cup finals so the top holds a special place in the memories of many Tartan Army foot soldiers.

Scott endeared himself to many over the summer with his performances in the pool at the Paris Oympics.

He added two more medals to his collection with an individual silver in the 200m medley and a team gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

He also has ten Commonwealth Games medals to his name, including three golds.

But Scott showed his humility when being compared to the likes of Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Andy Murray due to his record-breaking medal haul.

Scott is officially Scotland's most decorated Olympian and Team GB's third-most, but he played down his achievements due to many of his medals coming in relay events.

He said: "Colour-wise, Chris Hoy is way out in front. I shouldn't be put in the same sentence as that guy.

"Sir Andy Murray just called it a day, what a career he's had as well.

"Those two are huge inspirations for anything that I've ever done."

One fan said after seeing Scott in his national team colours: "Such a great example for all our young swimmers! You truly are a superstar swimmer, so proud of you for our wee country."
