Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler sent a cheeky message to Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian moved past him in the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts - saying he "preferred No.9 anyway."

Salah notched the 164th goal of his Premier League career with a superb strike to help Liverpool beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday, which moved him up to eighth in the top flight's leading scorers list - leapfrogging Fowler in the process.

Fowler enjoyed a magnificent time at Anfield, starting his career with Liverpool and becoming a club legend as he scored 171 times in 330 appearances between 1993 and 2002 - later returning for a two-season spell in 2005.

Now 49, Fowler has taken up management and has coached a handful of clubs in Australia and the Far East - and while it has been over a decade since he retired, he could not help but poke fun at himself after Salah surpassed his Premier League goal record of 163.

Fowler took to Twitter after Liverpool's win over Brighton and wrote: "Always preferred No 9 anyway", accompanied by a winking emoji, a nod to the iconic shirt number he wore in his career.

He ended his career with a total of 254 goals and will go down as one of the most prolific finishers in Premier League history.

Salah is also making a case to be remembered as one of English football's most iconic forwards after his heroics against the Seagulls - firing in a superb effort that curled into the top left-hand corner to win the game.

That takes him to 220 goals in total for the Reds and his manager Arne Slot hailed him as "special" after his late salvo.

"The second goal was a Mo Salah special," he said. "It’s not the first and not the last time he will score from that position."

Salah has nine goals in all competitions this season, acting as a key man for Slot as he bids to bring the title back to Anfield.

The player's contract expires at the end of the season and there has been speculation he could leave the Reds and join a Saudi Arabian club - after reported interest from Al-Ittihad.
