Wolves fans are humorously celebrating the re-election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, following a resurgence of an odd folk tale suggesting that the billionaire once played for their youth team. Trump secured a decisive victory over Kamala Harris in the polls, winning several key battleground states and becoming the 47th US President after his initial election in 2016.

The 78 year old entrepreneur, who transformed his family's company into a business empire and later hosted the US Apprentice TV show, is said to have briefly served as a goalkeeper for Wolves' academy over three decades ago. This unverified story first appeared in a November 1991 edition of Shoot! magazine, which claimed that Trump played for the youth side while his father was working for the US Air Force in the Midlands.

The report even suggests that Trump named one of his racehorses after Wolves' stadium, although these unsubstantiated claims have not been widely circulated since. "Billionaire tycoon Donald Trump once played six games in goal for Wolves' youth team while his American Air Force father was based in the Midlands," the report stated.

"One of the racehorses at Trump's New York stables is a three-year-old filly called Molineux Mayde.", reports the Mirror.

Before you start making quips about the face fitting the kit, it appears the story has quite a few discrepancies. It's understood that Trump Jr.'s involvement in horse racing was limited to a horse named DJ Trump, not related to Wolves' stadium. Moreover, by the time a young Donald would have been of age to play in an academy game, his father, born in 1905, would have been too old for any military service.

Nonetheless, this hasn't stopped Wolves fans from having a laugh about the rumours on Twitter and making light of the perplexing tale. One fan humorously suggested they could chalk this up as their "first win of the season".

Another referenced one of Trump's most contentious presidential actions, tweeting: "Can we just imagine him when the opposition are about to take a free kick: 'Build a wall'."

A different supporter expressed: "I will be highly disappointed if it isn't reported that Wolves fans are singing 'He's one of our own, he's one of our own' at the next home game."

Yet another simply quipped "make Wolves great again", while someone else remarked: "The path to the White House runs through the Molineux stadium."
