Everton strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto are in a battle for one spot rather than Sean Dyche tempted to play them as a pair.
Dyche was famed for using a 4-4-2 at Burnley spearheaded by Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes but doesn't think the system suits his personnel at Goodison.
Everton travel to West Ham on Saturday with Calvert-Lewin without a goal in six games and Beto having a goal disallowed at Southampton last Saturday after coming off the bench.
'For nine years everyone complained all I did was play two up front. Now they're asking why I'm not doing it. That is the conundrum of life as a manager,' said Dyche.
'The fact is you've got to suit the players you've got. I think the forwards here have always played as a single striker and there is nobody here who has played in a midfield two for a lot of their careers.

'The nuances are difficult. You have to know when your striker drops in, when to press and when to release. That takes time to learn.
'Different managers here have scouted players for a 4-3-3.'
Dyche has stayed loyal to Calvert-Lewin as his first-choice No 9 but admits Beto's recent energetic performances have made the choice harder.
'Striker is the hardest position on the pitch so I am tolerant if someone isn't scoring goals but Beto is learning, he's been receptive to taking the Premier League on board and the margins are getting tighter.'
Everton were unbeaten in five before their 1-0 reverse at St Mary's but want points on the board with Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all coming up in December.
