The contract status of every Aston Villa player shows what Monchi is building

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has a nice blend of experience and youth in his first-team squad

Aston Villa have been busy securing plenty of their players to long-term contracts since the arrival of Monchi as the club's president of football operations.

Since August 2023, six current first-team players have penned new deals with John McGinn, Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins all committing their futures last year. Leon Bailey penned a new contract in February, before Villa moved to secure Emi Martinez until 2029 at the end of August.

Jhon Duran is the latest player to be rewarded with a new deal after his electric start to the new season. The Colombia striker wanted to leave Villa in the summer transfer window, but after Villa turned down plenty of offers for his services, he returned to Bodymoor Heath ready to prove a point.

He has scored four goals in the Premier League and bagged the winner against Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this month. Morgan Rogers is currently in talks over a new contract too despite only joining the club at the start of the year.

Villa want to reward the forward for his rapid progress and put him on a deal which reflects his standing in the team.

Duran and summer signing Ian Maatsen are contracted at Villa until 2030, while Rogers, Kosta Nedeljkovic, Jaden Philogene, Amadou Onana and Martinez all have deals until 2029.

Watkins, Pau Torres, Joe Gauci and Konsa have contracts which will expire in 2028, while another six players have deals until 2027. They are McGinn, Youri Tielemans, Bailey, Ross Barkley, Boubacar Kamara, Matty Cash and Jacob Ramsey.

The youngster player whose deal is due to expire in 2026 is Emi Buendia, who will turn 28 years of age in December. Tyrone Mings, Diego Carlos and Lucas Digne will all also enter the final 12 months of their deals next summer.

While decisions will need to be made on those four players, Villa have positioned themselves well to protect their assets, especially younger players who can continue to improve and grow in value in the coming years under manager Unai Emery.

The average age of the 11 players which Villa have recruited in this calendar year is 22.2 years of age, including 30-year-old Barkley. Monchi wanted to drive down the average of Emery's squad so he can work with more players capable of improving under his management, therefore increasing the values of the squad.

"We were not afraid to sell players but we had to do it within a plan," Monchi said last month. "In my opinion we need to sell players because City sell players, Arsenal sell players, Real Madrid and Barcelona sell players.

"We are not afraid to sell players - the most important thing is to have, one - a buyer, and two - buy a player to replace this one."
