Redecoration rather than reconstruction is the plan when Knighthead gets to grips with the Main Stand at St Andrew’s next summer.

Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner recently revealed that the Main Stand will be getting the attention of Nick Smith and his team of builders next year after the other three stands were redeveloped before the current season.

Knighthead invested £15million on infrastructure projects during the summer, led by head of infrastructure Smith, and revamped St Andrew’s. But the Main Stand was left lagging behind.

Smith intends to smarten the Main Stand up, but he doesn’t want to meddle too much and create further issues.

Asked about plans for the Main Stand at this week’s Open House, Smith said: “We are going to do work on it, but it depends what you are determining develop. Obviously it’s a very old stand, it’s got its issues, so I don’t think we’re going to do wholesale reconstruction and build a new stand.

“Yes we’re going to redecorate, yes we’re going to create some experience in there, but in terms of wholesale reconstruction, we definitely don’t want to open that old lady up.”
