Alfons Sampsted has become the latest Birmingham City player to return from international duty with an injury.

The right-back started Iceland’s 4-1 defeat to Wales on Tuesday but had to be replaced with 15 minutes remaining after pulling up with an ankle injury. Sampsted, who hasn’t yet made a League One start for Blues, is set for a spell on the sidelines.

“Unfortunately Sampsted has picked up a bit of a knock on his ankle,” Blues manager Chris Davies confirmed before the team’s trip to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday. “It looks like it will be a few weeks, he has rolled his ankle. It’s disappointing but he won’t be out too long."

Sampsted joins Scott Wright and Emil Hansson in Blues’ treatment room. The wide men haven’t featured for Blues since mid-October and Davies doesn’t expect either of them to return imminently.

Giving an update, Davies said: “They are on their way back from their knocks and pushing themselves – hopefully only a few weeks. They have made progress but they are still not quite there yet.”

The outlook is more positive for Lee Buchanan who, after nearly four months without a game, is on the brink of a comeback. Left-back Buchanan has battled calf issues since pre-season but could soon return to the fold.

“Lee will potentially be involved in a fixture tomorrow (Friday) to give him some game exposure, it’s a behind-closed-doors type of thing,” revealed Davies. “He’s definitely built up from where he was because he’s played no football this season so I’m really hoping Lee can make this final step in the next couple of weeks to become available.

“He’s a player that I was really looking forward to working with and using, and hopefully he can get back and contribute now.”
