Former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is reportedly set to be appointed the new head coach of MLS side Inter Miami.

The 40-year-old Reds icon made 139 appearances for Liverpool between 2006 and 2010 before departing for Catalan giants Barcelona. He formed a formidable midfield trio alongside Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard, but it eventually split when Alonso departed for Real Madrid in 2009.

Mascherano lifted two Champions League titles and five La Liga's during his time in Spain before eventually retiring in Argentina after a brief stint in China.

He has since moved into coaching and after an impressive spell in charge of Argentina's under-20 squad, he's reportedly about to land his first role in club football at Inter Miami.

David Beckham's Florida outfit have been hunting for a new manager following the departure of Gerardo 'Tata' Martino who resigned after guiding them to a MLS-record 74 points in the regular season. However, the club failed to win the playoffs and were eliminated by Atalanta United in the first round.

According to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Mascherano has agreed to sign a long-term deal at Miami which will see him reunite with former Barcelona and Argentina teammate, and close friend, Lionel Messi. He will also link up with former Reds striker Luis Suarez who moved to the club earlier this year.

Beckham and co. will hope that the close relationship Mascherano already shares with some members of the squad will be key to getting them over the line as they try to lift the MLS Cup next season.

Inter Miami will also feature on the world stage next year in the expanded version of the Club World Cup which is set to include Premier League sides Manchester City and Chelsea.
