Tyrone Mings left 'absolutely fuming' after what happened in Aston Villa's win

Tyrone Mings admitted he was 'absolutely fuming' that Aston Villa allowed Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard to leave a small stain on an otherwise fruitful evening as they returned to winning ways for the first time since October.

Centre half Mings was given the nod by Unai Emery ahead of fellow left-sided centre half Pau Torres and lined up with Ezri Konsa for the first time since his last Premier League appearance, on the opening day of last season at Newcastle United.

In an otherwise encouraging display - Mings has only featured twice since returning from his knee injury, at Brugge in the Champions League and against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup - Villa did allow Brentford some brief second half hope when Damsgaard pulled one back, with Villa 3-0 up at the time.

Emery was visibly annoyed by conceding the goal, and Mings reflected those emotions. Despite the goals, the points, the return of that winning feeling, Mings - who'll hope to be starting again against Southampton on Saturday - he knows there are more gears for the Lions to go through as they seek to retrieve their best form.

“I’m absolutely fuming that we didn’t keep a clean sheet, because I felt we were in control, and I think that’s something that’s been missing,” he told Villa's club channels. “We are sometimes feeling comfortable without the ball, and I think that’s just as important as feeling comfortable with the ball.

“We all knew as a team tonight, that keeping a clean sheet was a way to start feeling comfortable again. There are definitely things we can improve on, but the effort from the team tonight was absolutely fantastic and we have to keep working.

“The league is relentless, the teams we are playing against are of a very high standard, so we have to keep being positive - as the most important thing. The fact we sent the fans home tonight with a win and a positive feeling around the place was important.”
