Robbie Savage is under consideration for an unexpected role that could see him help Manchester United develop younger players. The former United academy prospect became the head coach of Macclesfield in the summer after just under four years at the club in a number of different roles.

Despite it being his first job in management, Savage has got off to a strong start with Macclesfield, who are unbeaten and top of the Northern Premier League - Premier Division which is step 3 of non-league football directly below the National League North and South.

While having not lost in the league, Macclesfield missed out on an FA Cup first round proper tie against Huddersfield after losing to Tamworth in the fourth qualifying round. Though he has only been in charge for a few months, Savage could have departed earlier this year after being offered a lucrative, but undisclosed, TV role.

Despite that, Savage has still made some TV appearances as a pundit and now a new opportunity in football could be heading his way, which may be too good to turn down. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, the 50-year-old is under consideration for the managerial vacancy at Northampton Town.

Paul Ince, another man to have been on the books at United, is also among those linked to replacing Jon Brady. Established football league managers Gary Rowett and Karl Robinson, the latter currently in charge of Salford City, are believed to be other options.

Given where he is currently coaching, Savage is certainly the rogue candidate, but if Northampton decide to take a gamble, it could benefit United. With their former player in charge of a League 1 side, United could look to utilise that relationship by sending their young players to the Cobblers on loan.

In recent seasons, Amad is the best example of a United player to have enjoyed a positive loan in the EFL with his spell at Sunderland preparing him for Premier League football. Under Erik ten Hag, he was rarely given an opportunity, but he already looks set to be a crucial player for Ruben Amorim.
