West Bromwich Albion have turned into the draw specialists with nine of their last ten games ending all square.
An unbeaten run of ten games looks, and is, impressive until you look at the points tally. It has earned them just 12. But it also highlights the fine margins and why goalscorers are at a premium and so hard and expensive to find.
Turning just a third of those draws, especially at home, into wins would see the Baggies nicely placed in fourth spot in the Championship table.
The issue could be either not creating enough chances or not taking enough chances. In this case it seems to be the latter.
That says their overall play is good, however, the game is about winning and to win you have to be clinical in front of goal.
Albion’s home form is their biggest problem with only four goals scored in eight games, with five of those ending in draws and four finishing goalless.
Some supporters think they are always looking to score the ‘perfect’ goal, which involves lots of neat passing. I am not sure that is correct as I am certain Carlos Corberan wants them to shoot more and create more goalscoring chances. However, teams come to The Hawthorns and park the bus.
Away from home, bizarrely, Albion are the division’s second-highest scorers with 15 goals, more than any of the top four clubs. But on the road the home teams are expected to come out and attack and that makes for a far more open game. That suits Albion’s way of playing.
On the positive side, they have the second-best home defensive record in the division with just three conceded.
We all go to games, firstly, to see our team win, but also to enjoy and get excited about lots of goalmouth action that includes goals, shots, chances, great saves and near-misses.
Most supporters only see their team’s home games, so Baggies fans have only witnessed four goals in total with two of those coming in the same match. It is easy to understand how frustrated they are. If the away record of W4 D5 L1, scored 15, conceded nine, was the home record I am pretty certain fans would not be as unhappy as they are now.
However, there is a lot right about the club under Corberan. That is why I cannot understand the reaction of some supporters who are looking for a change of head coach.
As I said, it’s fine margins and we should remember that striker Daryl Dike, who was expected back from injury before Christmas, now has to wait until after the festive period due to a new training ground muscle injury.
Time to batten down the hatches and weather the storm because I am convinced Corberan will get it sorted, despite a growing injury list.
