Joelinton has been left with a cut on his mouth as well as a 'nasty' gash on his ear following Newcastle United's Carabao Cup quarter-final win against Brentford.

Joelinton was sent crashing to the turf in the 18th minute after Nathan Collins caught the Brazilian with his elbow as they jumped for the ball. Referee Sam Barrott played on and Collins leapt into the air once again before landing on Joelinton and catching the midfielder with his studs.

Joelinton immediately threw an arm up to ask for the game to be stopped so he could receive some treatment inside Newcastle's box. Martin Dubravka, seeing the blood coming out of both Joelinton's ear and mouth, frantically waved Newcastle's doctor and physiotherapist on to the pitch.

As Joelinton got to his feet, the furious midfielder gave Collins a piece of his mind and his team-mates stepped in. Dubravka pulled Joelinton back at one point before Bruno Guimaraes arrived on the scene to try and calm his countryman down.

Michael Bridges, who was on co-commentary, understood Joelinton's anger because if he 'saw the studs of another player coming down and landing on my face, it's not good', but the former Newcastle striker stressed Collins was 'completely looking at the ball'.

Joelinton required further treatment later in the half and the 28-year-old was replaced by Joe Willock at the break before being taken to hospital to get fixed up.

"It was an injury to his ear," boss Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Newcastle. "He got a nasty cut. He had a cut on his mouth as well so he's gone off to get his ear looked at."

Joelinton will miss Newcastle's trip to Ipswich on Saturday through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card in the league last week.
