Celtic hero Barry Robson returns to management as he takes over at SPFL club 11 months after Aberdeen axe

The manager has spoken for the first team after his appointment

BARRY ROBSON has returned to management in a shock appointment - 11 months after being shown the door at Pittodrie.

The former Celtic, Dundee United and Scotland midfielder was axed by Aberdeen in January and has been on the hunt for his next role in the dugout ever since.

Now he has made his return and he is back in the SPFL with Raith Rovers.

He will take charge at Stark's Park after Neill Collins quit for Sacramento Republic.

Robson will be in the dugout for Saturday's trip to face Ayr United at Somerset Park - where he will face former team-mate Scott Brown.

The 46-year-old is Rovers' third boss of the season after Ian Murray was axed in August and Collins was appointed his successor.

John Potter and Colin Cameron were in temporary charge for the 2-1 win over Livingston on Saturday.

A statement from the club read: "Barry is our new manager, joining on a two and a half year deal. His experience as a player and coach, as well as his passion and vision for success, set him apart from a strong list of candidates.

"Welcome to our club, Barry."

Robson said: “It’s a great honour to be appointed as the manager of Raith Rovers, and I’m truly excited about the challenge ahead.

The club’s potential is clear to see, and the vision shared by the Board of Directors during our discussions made this an opportunity I was eager to be part of.”

CEO Andrew Barrowman said: “On behalf of Raith Rovers Football Club, I am delighted to welcome Barry Robson as our new manager.

"Barry’s knowledge around who we are as a club and the expectations that our loyal fanbase crave, separated him from an exceptional list of candidates.
