Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong reveals that he has been left disappointed by the amount of silverware that he was won at Camp Nou.

Frenkie de Jong has revealed that he expected to win "at least double" the amount of silverware that he has lifted at Barcelona.

The 27-year-old has been with the Catalan giants since 2019, making a total of 226 appearances in all competitions.

During that period, the Netherlands international has been restricted to one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and one Supercopa de Espana.

Speaking in an extensive interview with Voetbal International, De Jong has acknowledged that he anticapted enjoying far more success during his time in Spain.

I didn't foresee lack of silverware'

He said: "When I signed for Barcelona, I didn't imagine I'd have just one La Liga, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa de Espana after four years.

"I expected at least double that, so it's disappointing. Things happen off the pitch that you can't predict."

De Jong was referring to the constant financial restrictions that have been placed on Barcelona since he left Ajax five-and-a-half years ago.

Barcelona have been unable to purchase or register players in La Liga with any consistency, negatively impacting on their efforts to build a team capable of challenging Real Madrid in the long term.

Such a situation may also prove influential when it comes to deciding whether De Jong will extend his contract past 2026.

What has De Jong said on contract?

At a time when De Jong has 18 months remaining on his contract, he has admitted that remaining at Barcelona in the long term is far from a foregone conclusion.

The Dutchman added: "People think I want to stay in Barcelona forever because life outside football is so good here, and it is, but what happens on the pitch is still more important.

"If I felt I couldn't contribute enough, or if the team couldn't compete, I would leave."

He added: "My contract renewal is a topic for the local papers, not for me. I want to play football, and then I'll see what the club wants to do with me.

"After that, I'll decide what I want to do with my agent and my family."

An ankle injury has heavily hindered De Jong over the past year. Before the end of 2024, though, he was able to two starts and 11 substitute outings in La Liga and the Champions League, his last outing coming on December 11.
