Luis Diaz signs for MLS club as supporters left disappointed
The latest Liverpool transfer news at the start of the January window as Luis Diaz continues to be linked with La Liga giants Barcelona
Liverpool have entered the January transfer window in the peculiar position of fending off interest in their star-studded crop of players. For a club at the top of the Premier League and Champions League, one would think it is they who would be doing the poaching.
But instead the contract situations of the big three - Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold - dominate the headlines. The latter in particular, once mooted as a potential future captain of the club, is of huge focus as Real Madrid have thrown their cards on the table in recent days.
The Reds will also be wary of not allowing more players to reach similar hazardous scenarios in years to come. Arne Slot, Richard Hughes and the Anfield hierarchy have some major decisions to make regarding who remains at the club in years to come.
With that said, the ECHO rounds up the latest Liverpool transfer news from around the globe.
Luis Diaz signs for MLS club
MLS franchise New England Revolution have announced the signing of Luis Diaz.
That might have been a heart-in-mouth moment for Liverpool supporters all around the world, though fear not. Instead of the Reds No.7 going to Massachusetts, they have actually only signed his namesake - a 26-year-old Costa Rican winger, who arrives from Deportivo Saprissa.
It marks the player's return to the United States, having previously spent time with Columbus Crew and Colorado Rapids.
"Thought we did something cool for once," one Revolution fan replied on Instagram, whilst another on X suggested: "Get the Colombian one. He's pretty good."
Barcelona hope to capitalise
But in the whole Diaz saga, there appears to be another threat re-emerging.
According to Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona sporting director Deco is keeping close tabs on the winger's contract renewal negotiations at Anfield.
The 27-year-old's contract with Liverpool expires in 2027. Whilst they have more pressing concerns with Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold in that regard, Spanish media have said the club are actively making progress to extend Diaz's stay.
And if that operation fails, Deco is said to be waiting on Diaz over alternative left-wing options on the market, such as Rafael Leao, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Nico Williams.
