Tranmere give blunt response to Roy Keane's Trent Alexander-Arnold jibe

Roy Keane claimed Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive display was more akin to playing for Tranmere Rovers - not Real Madrid - as the League Two side hit back on social media

Tranmere Rovers laughed off the idea of signing Trent Alexander-Arnold after Roy Keane mocked his defending.

The Liverpool right-back endured a bad day at the office as Liverpool were held by Manchester United on Sunday. Alexander-Arnold found himself struggling defensively as the visitors continued to attack down his flank, getting plenty of joy.

Throughout his career, the Liverpool man's defensive attributes have been criticised and Sunday's draw was another case in point. Keane was so stunned at the lack of quality that he joked about the 26-year-old being more likely to join Tranmere, currently in League Two.

Alexander-Arnold himself has been linked with a switch to Real Madrid as his contract winds down but the ex-United captain claimed his defending was more akin to playing in the fourth tier of English football.

Tranmere though saw the opportunity and quickly took to social media as they said: "Trent to Tranmere, Roy? Nah, we're alright thanks" - alongside a picture of their current right-back, Cameron Norman.

Alexander-Arnold's future continues to be subject of huge debate with Real circling. They put in an opening bid just days ago, which was quickly rejected, as the Reds hope to eventually hold onto their academy graduate.

Jamie Carragher was equally critical of the Liverpool man and believes the constant talk surrounding his future looks to have filtered into his performance on the pitch with Alexander-Arnold offering little, both in defence and attack.

He said: "I thought he was really poor today, I don't think the game could've gone much worse for him. There was definitely going to be focus on him, I expected Trent to bring the performances we've seen so often. He almost dominates the game from right-back, as a playmaker.

"I was expecting a really big performance. He was poor defensively, which we've seen before, but there was nothing going forward, even on the ball. Only he knows if the talk affected him, but the fact that he was so poor in the first game after Real Madrid's bid, tells me it must've affected him."
