ST JOHNSTONE are set to sign Swedish midfielder Jonathan Svedberg.

The 25-year-old has agreed to join Simo Valakari’s team after leaving Halmstads at the end of his contract.

Svedberg spent nine years playing for the Allsvenskan side but announced he wanted to move abroad earlier this month.

Valakari has been desperate to freshen up his squad in this window so has already added goalkeeper Andy Fisher and Panama international Victor Griffith.

Bringing in Svedberg, who will need to complete the work permit process before he can play, adds another dynamic option to his midfield.

The Swede won’t be available for this weekend’s Scottish Cup tie against Motherwell but Saints will be trying to force his paperwork through as quickly as possible.

Valakari is planning major changes to his stuttering side in this month's window so could bring in Finnish legend Roman Eremenko at the conclusion of his training stint this weekend.

The 37-year-old one-time £13 million man jetted in on Tuesday to team up with his fellow Finn's squad after training with Valakari's son Onni during the Nordic country's winter break.

Ex-Nottingham Forest man Jake Taylor, who can play midfield or full-back, is also training at McDiarmid Park as he bids to win a deal.

Meanwhile fellow Premiership strugglers Ross County have also bolstered their ranks.

Zac Ashworth, a Welsh youth international and son of former Newcastle and Man Utd sporting director Dan, has arrived in Dingwall.

He's been followed by six-foot-four centre half Jonathan Tomkinson - a United States youth international - signed up on loan from Norwich City.

Don Cowie said: "Jonathan helps us to add competition to our defensive area.

"He comes with good pedigree having played regularly for Bradford City last season during his loan spells. He is a real presence at the back as well as being mobile too."

He added: "Zac comes with a good amount of games played in English football as well as with the Welsh national team at youth level. He is a versatile player who has experience playing as a full-back as well as at centre back.’

"We thank Blackpool for their assistance in making his loan move possible."
