James McClean brands Shrewsbury a 'cesspit full of inbreds' as he blasts back at fans abuse with savage attack

The 35-year-old is regularly targeted by away fans and has taken to social media to have his say after abuse

Police and stewards form a barrier in front of the fans as James McClean of Wrexham prepares to take a throw-in

James McClean branded Shrewsbury a "cesspit full of inbreds" after being subjected to abuse by their fans.

The Wrexham star is a frequent target for opposition fans and they taunted him during a 2-1 win for Shrews against the Welsh side in an incident-packed cross-border derby at New Meadow on Thursday night. Ex Scotland striker Steven Fletcher was on target for the Dragons with ex Republic of Ireland star McClean confronting a section of the home fans in a fiery exchange.

McClean was also on the end of a crunching tackle from Toto Nsiala which resulted in huge cheers from the home fans who lapped it up. The 35-year-old Derry native was also pelted with objects and taunted and he has responded on Instagram, saying: "In fairness if I was born and raised in Shrewsbury I'd probably be this angry as well cause it's an absolute cesspit full of inbreds."

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said after the game: "He's fine. James is used to it wherever he goes. Fans get on his back home and away and sometimes it can be tough and spill over but he is used to it."
