Sir Alex Ferguson was a regular face at Denis Law's nursing home and visited the Manchester United legend up to three times at week before his passing, according to reports.

Law's death at the age of 84, following a battle with dementia, sent English football into mourning after the last of United's "Holy Trinity", including George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, passed away.

Flowers have been laid at the statue of the trio outside Old Trafford and further tributes, including a minutes' silence, are expected ahead of the team's home game against Brighton on Sunday.

Ferguson will be at the game to pay tribute to his close friend after the Sun revealed the legendary Scot had paid regular visits to the nursing home where Law was being cared for in Cheshire.

It's believed the care home was located close to Ferguson's house and made frequent visits to support his friend - with the Scotsmen sharing a close relationship.

A statement confirming Law's death was released by the former United star's family on Friday, as they said: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."

Law is one of United's greatest players of all time, having won two English titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup with the Red Devils - while also winning the Ballon d'Or prize in 1964. He is United's third-highest scorer of all time with 237 strikes.

Ferguson has previously revealed how he idolised Law as a player and was starstruck when he first met him before striking up a friendship. He said: 'Denis Law was my hero as a player, I idolised him,' he said.

'When I first met him, I was so excited. It was at a game in Paris, where he had played in the first half and we went for a cup of tea afterwards. I thought: "This is it, I’ve made it, I’m having a cup of tea with Denis Law!"

'For me, he epitomised everything that a Scotsman is about. He was daring and courageous, he had that bravado about him and he had style. He was a truly fantastic footballer.'
