Manchester United have, reportedly, decided against signing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes.
The club have often been linked with the Portuguese, given the ongoing injury problems with Luke Shaw. Ruben Amorim has, also, previously worked with Nunes during his time at Sporting Clube de Portugal.
In the absence of Tyrell Malacia and Shaw, Amorim has been forced to use temporary solutions at left wing-back, helping to deploy his favoured 3-4-3 system. As a result, right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have had to switch across from their natural side.
According to The Independent, meanwhile, United are unwilling to meet PSG's high valuation of Mendes, which is claimed to be £51million. It's said the Reds believe that figure to be "way above" their valuation.
After former manager Erik ten Hag was backed with more than £200million on new players last summer, United must be more cautious in the January transfer window in order to balance their books. PSG, meanwhile, are also said to be reluctant to sell Mendes, who they value highly - and have under contract until 2026.
The Manchester Evening News understands that United are not actively targeting the left-back this month, as per previous reports. However, as he will enter the final year of his deal in Paris at the end of the campaign, the French champions may be forced into a deal to avoid losing him for free further down the line.
The report adds that United also have Rayan Ait-Nouri as a potential option in their list. The Frenchman has been a stand-out performer for Wolves, despite their ongoing fight against relegation this season.
His versatility of being able to play in defence and in the advanced wing-back role is also thought to make him an attractive option for the United hierarchy. Having been at Wolves since 2020, his contract will also run out in 2026 - although the club have the option to extend that for a further year.
