Calls for ‘iconic’ Denis Law tribute grow as AIRPORT renaming & Hampden memorial suggested in honour of Scotland great

CALLS were growing last night for Denis Law to be immortalised with an “iconic” tribute.
Campaigners suggested the footie hero’s legacy could be preserved for generations to come by renaming Aberdeen Airport or a Hampden Park stand in his honour.
And a politician said he’d love to see The Lawman remembered in his home city with a mural at Pittodrie Stadium.
Tributes were paid over the weekend at grounds north and south of the border to the former Manchester United and Scotland star, who died last Friday at 84.
One fan said: “We should have Aberdeen Denis Law Airport — just like they did in Liverpool for John Lennon and in Belfast for George Best.”
And SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, MP for Aberdeen South, said: “I’m sure we’d all love to see something iconic put in place to honour Denis.
“Whether that’s renaming a stand at Hampden, or Aberdeen Airport, it’s important to take time and ensure those closest to him are happy with whatever memorial seems most fitting.”
Aberdeen already has a statue to Law in the city centre but Douglas Lumsden, MSP for North East Scotland, agreed a new accolade would be fitting.
He said: “It has been touching to read and listen to all of the tributes to Denis Law.
“Lots of people came from far and wide at the weekend to visit his statue in Marischal Square.
“Aberdeen FC’s stadium should have space for a new mural to Denis. This would reflect his importance to Scots football as one of our greatest-ever players.”
Last night an Aberdeen Airport spokesman said: “While there are no plans for renaming, it is no surprise there have been calls for a lasting tribute to him.
“Denis Law will forever remain part of our region’s identity.”
The Denis Law Legacy Trust, set up in 2011, organises free activities for kids in Aberdeen.
Charity boss, Mark Williams, 34, said: “We’ll be working hard to make sure the projects Denis signed off on become reality. Our work really does start now.”
In 1964, Law became the only Scot to win the Ballon d’Or as Europe’s greatest player.
He is jointly the national team’s record goalscorer with Kenny Dalglish.
