Fresh Aston Villa transfer link emerges with right winger who is an international 'star'
Aston Villa transfer latest as the club are tipped to move for Sporting Lisbon winger and Mozambique international Geny Catamo
Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in Sporting Lisbon winger Geny Catamo in this January transfer window. Villa, Wolves, Fulham and clubs in Italy have all been linked with a move for Catamo, who moved to the Portuguese capital in the summer of 2021.
He is a Mozambique international who moved to Portugal as a teenager when he was picked up by Amora in 2018. He joined Sporting's B team a summer later and has since embarked on a number of loan spells with Maritimo and Vitoria Guimaraes, the latter who are part owned by NSWE as a part of their V Sports portfolio.
Catamo has since broken into the Sporting first-team and, this season and last, he has established himself in the starting XI on a regular basis. At the time of writing, Catamo has scored four goals and produced four assists in his 29 appearances this term to date. Last year he made 41 appearances as Sporting won the Portuguese title.
He has attracted interest from the continent, specifically from England and Italy; reports emerging from Portugal claim that Villa are among a number of Premier League sides who have kept tabs on Catamo's progress in recent months.
Last year, Mozambique manager Chiquinho Conde, said of Catamo, who has 29 caps for his country: “He will realise that if he continues to work with this quality and his performances remain consistent, he may attract interest from foreign clubs, and we welcome that because he is our star; our reference in Mozambique and the national team.”
