Jonathan David gives verdict on Liverpool as free transfer to giant club looms
Lille forward Jonathan David scored against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday night and was full of praise for the Reds after the game
Lille's star forward Jonathan David heaped praise on Liverpool by suggesting they might be the world's top team after Lille's Champions League defeat at Anfield.
Despite netting a goal to equalise Mohamed Salah's opener for the Reds, David's efforts weren't enough as Harvey Elliott secured Arne Slot's team's win and passage to the last 16 against the French side, who were reduced to 10 men.
The prolific Canadian striker, who has also scored against football giants Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus this season, is in the spotlight with his contract winding down, making him a hot prospect for a free transfer come summer.
David, 25, once reportedly a target for the Premier League leaders before they opted for Portuguese hotshot Diogo Jota, could be back on their radar as he seems unlikely to renew his stay in France.
Reflecting on the Champions League clash, David admitted he was impressed by Liverpool's performance. "Very good team," he said following the game. "I think they might be the best team in the world at the moment.
"Tonight is one more goal [for me]. I'm happy I managed to score but we didn't manage to get the three points. We came against the first of the Champions League group so we knew it was going to be a complicated game even more so when we went to 10 men.
"It's frustrating, we wanted to hold on as long as we could but it's very difficult. Today wasn't our day. The togetherness. Everyone is very solid and compact. We want to play and play our game this is how we're going to get further."
David has already revealed he is open to a Premier League move in the summer. But it is not the only destination he is focused on as he considers the next step in his career.
"What am I waiting for? I guess now it's easier to say. I'm in the last year of my contract," David said earlier this season. "Eventually my contract is going to run out. So then we'll see. We'll see what happens next year. I'm open to anything.
"I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best leagues in the world . And for me it's not the Premier League or bust. I'm open to anything and every league has its challenges.
David's agents have recently reaffirmed that all options are being considered regarding his future.
