Loris Karius has been revealed as the latest acquisition for Schalke, although the formalities of joining the German squad were carried out without his partner.

The ex-Liverpool goalkeeper found himself a free agent after parting ways with NewcastleNewcastle United FC at the conclusion of his contract last year. Now, Karius is committed to Schalke until the end of the season with the Bundesliga 2 team.

The Germany-born goalkeeper will rival Justin Heekeren for the primary goalkeeping role, coming off a period of rarely playing. Since racking up 49 performances for Liverpool, the 31-year-old had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin, followed by a brief stint at Newcastle, where he notched only two appearances after signing as a free agent in September 2022.

Forging a successful path with Schalke will also involve Karius navigating life without his wife, Diletta Leotta – a broadcaster covering Serie A on DAZN, who had hoped to have her spouse join her in Italy.

Karius admitted: "Of course she was hoping a little for Italy. I explained it to her. She wishes me the best in my career and said she is fully behind it.”

He went on to mention, “Milan is not far away. We can find ways to solve it. She has a lot to do too, so we will both be commuting back and forth a bit.

"If your partner is also in the public eye, it's clear that something will be reported. But I never actively pushed myself into it. For me, the sport was always the priority."

Leotta has openly expressed her eagerness for Karius to leave Newcastle due to the difficulties of travelling to the city. She has not hidden her wish for Karius to develop an affinity for Italy.

"Loris has people at his side who work for him," she disclosed to Tuttosport. "I hope he makes the best decision for his career.

"I live in Milan, so let's say being close to Milan would be ideal for us. I always tell him, players who come to Serie A then fall in love with Italy and often stay there forever. I think that could happen to him too.

"[He should join] Monza or any other team in Italy. I would be happy if he came to Italy to play near his family. Newcastle is very inconvenient because there are no direct flights. Neither about Paris nor about Amsterdam."
