LEWIS FERGUSON is one of the many Scots flying the flag out in the Italian Serie A.

With the likes of Billy Gilmour, Scott McTominay and Josh Doig joining him on the continent, it's become commonplace for Scotland stars to fly the nest.

But it wasn't always so common for Scots to leave our shores to play their football.

One of the most famous examples is of course legendary figure Denis Law, who spent a year at Torino before his iconic spell with Manchester United.

And Ferguson has opened up on his experience with Law, telling the Daily Mail about the former forward's lovely gesture when the Bologna man broke one of his records.

He said: "Somebody from the Law charity trust had come over with the award and presented it to me because I’d become the highest scoring Scot ever in Serie A.

"I signed some shirts to raise some money for the charity as well and then, out of the blue, Denis himself got in touch with a lovely message a bit later.

"It was special because he was such an iconic player in Scotland, one of the absolute greatest.

"And it was such a surprise to receive such a lovely detailed message from him, telling me 'Well done, keep going, keep it up.'

"It was really, really nice, a beautiful message, something he didn’t need to do and it meant the world to me.

"That’s why I was so sad to see the news of his death last week, he was just such an iconic man, an iconic player, one of the greatest we’ve ever seen.

"He was one of the trailblazers for Scots in Italy, and let’s just say back in the day it probably wasn’t as easy as it is nowadays, everything is there for you now.

"It must have been much more difficult in the 1960s, I’d imagine.

"So thank you to Denis for doing that because he was an inspiration to everybody that plays the game and it was absolutely an inspiration to me when I received that."

And fellow Scot Che Adams equalled a poignant record in Italy after becoming the first Scot to net a double in Serie A for 64 years since Law, also for Torino... exactly a week after the legend passed away.

Tributes poured in for Law last week, who was Scotland's only Ballon d'Or winner and remains the joint all-time top international scorer for his country with 30 goals - a record he shares with Kenny Dalglish.

Law netted ten goals in the season he had in Italy with Torino before returning to English football with Manchester United, were he would become an icon.

Of those ten goals he scored, he netted two doubles - with the last of them coming in a 3-1 win at Udinese in 1961.

And Scotland star Adams finally matched that record with a brace as he helped Torino beat Cagliari 2-0 and scored his seventh Serie A goal of the season.

Although plenty of Scots have scored in Serie A since Law, including Joe Jordan, Graeme Souness, Lewis Ferguson, Scott McTominay, Aaron Hickey and Liam Henderson, none have managed a double... until Adams this week.

Jordan did score two goals in a game in Italy, but it was for Verona when they were in Serie B.

Torino manager, former Rangers player Paolo Vanoli, said: "I have always believed in the qualities of Che Adams and his work rate has been so impressive since he joined us."
