Jordan Henderson's latest lucrative career move has hit a stumbling block after his proposed transfer to Monaco collapsed. The ex-Liverpool skipper was reportedly eager for a move to the French Riviera, but it now appears he will remain in Amsterdam until at least season's end – with Ajax stripping him of the captaincy as a result.

A potential move to Monaco could have been financially beneficial for Henderson due to the principality not charging income tax. The 34-year-old has previously played in a tax-free state during his brief stint at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, and his flirtation with Les Monegasques may suggest he's seeking a similar lifestyle.

However, Henderson's case is complicated by his short tenure in the Saudi Pro League. Express Sport has delved into the midfielder's earnings history as he navigates another frantic winter transfer window.

Transfer U-turn

Just as things seemed to be progressing towards Henderson joining Monaco, the transfer is now believed to have fallen through. In response, Ajax have stripped him of the club's armband, indicating it was the player pushing for a move to another tax haven-based outfit.

Having joined the Eredivisie giants just over one year ago, Henderson still has approximately 18 months left on his Ajax contract. And despite gesturing towards the exit, Francesco Farioli chose to field him in Sunday's match at home to Feyenoord.

Monaco allegedly wanted Ajax to terminate Henderson's contract so they could secure his services on a free transfer this week. However, the failed deal means he'll have to make do with his current £66,000-a-week wage at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Henderson's substantial net worth

Henderson spent 15 years in the Premier League before joining forces with Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq. His tenure as Liverpool captain saw him earning a staggering £10million per year (£190,000 per week) at the peak of his Anfield career.

Salary Sport estimated Henderson raked in roughly £53m during his last seven seasons on Merseyside. This is in addition to the £3.4m yearly salary he'll receive at Ajax, pushing his gross career earnings well beyond the £60m mark.

This doesn't even take into account any endorsement or sponsorship deals he may have had with brands such as MaxiNutrition, MyProtein or Nike over the years. While Henderson would have paid significant amounts in taxes throughout his career, it's safe to conservatively estimate his current net worth to be more than £35m.

Earnings in Saudi Arabia

Despite rumours of a whopping £700,000-a-week Saudi salary, Henderson told The Athletic that his pay was not "the numbers that were reported." However, the financial aspect of his stint at Al-Ettifaq became somewhat irrelevant due to the circumstances surrounding his departure.

Henderson's contract in Saudi Arabia contained a tax exemption clause that required a minimum two-year stay to avoid a 20% flat income tax rate. Departing just six months into his contract, not only did he miss out on the exemption, but he also deferred his salary for tax reasons.

Sports journalist Ben Jacobs disclosed that Henderson supposedly forfeited any owed wages to expedite the termination of his Al-Ettifaq contract. So despite initial speculation of a huge financial windfall from his time in the Middle East, Henderson's Saudi Arabian venture might end up being the least profitable chapter of his career.
